Department of Fine Arts

Based on the experience and expertise of renowned professors and instructors who have exhibited their work across the globe, students of Fine Arts at AUM learn traditional and contemporary principles, methods and techniques for building specialized roles in the field, emphasizing personal expression and specialization in a variety of art careers including graphic design, drawing and painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and art history.

Through a combination of coursework, focused studio time and collaboration with fellow students and faculty members, you can earn the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with a choice of five concentrations or a Bachelor of Art in Fine Arts with a choice of two concentrations.

The Auburn University at Montgomery Department of Fine Arts is home to ten full-time faculty and lecturers. They hold terminal degrees in their field (MFAs and PhDs) and their collective knowledge spans graphic design, analog and digital photography, 3-D printing, sculpture, performance art, ceramics, musicology, percussion performance, painting, art history, and drawing. 

In addition to offering undergraduate and graduate classes in their areas of expertise, each one also maintains an active practice devoted to creative work, exhibitions, academic research and scholarly publishing, or public performance.

The newly renovated Cason McDermott Art Gallery on the AUM campus is an integral part of the programs and curricula of the Department of Fine Arts and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and features:

  • Works by regionally and nationally recognized visiting artists
  • Works by Fine Arts Department faculty and students
  • Exhibits designed and curated by Art History and Museum Studies students and faculty
  • A collection of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper (with strengths in 20th-century prints) owned the department
