Career Outlook for Medical Billing and Coding Professionals

Healthcare organizations depend on accurate patient information to document services, manage records, process claims, and support reimbursement. Medical records specialists provide the knowledge and attention to detail needed to help manage these processes.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment of medical records specialists to grow 8% nationally through 2035, much faster than the 3% average for all occupations. Approximately 14,000 openings are projected each year, on average, over the decade. The median annual salary for medical billers, also referred to as medical records specialists on the BLS, was $51,140.

Certification, experience, and specialization can influence earning potential. According to AAPC’s recent Salary Survey, noncertified respondents reported average annual earnings of $61,022, while certified respondents averaged $66,186—an 8.5% difference.

Medical Billing and Coding FAQs

Medical billing and coding professionals help translate information about patient care into standardized records and claims used throughout the healthcare system. Medical coders review clinical documentation and assign appropriate codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services. Medical billers use coded information to prepare insurance claims and support the reimbursement process.

Depending on the employer and position, professionals may specialize in either billing or coding, or perform responsibilities across both areas.

Medical billers and coders work in a variety of healthcare and healthcare-related environments. Employment settings may include hospitals, physicians’ offices, administrative and support services, and professional, scientific, and technical services.

Opportunities may also exist with healthcare technology companies, government organizations, and educational institutions.

After successfully passing the final exam, you will receive a certificate of completion. You will also receive applicable study materials and a voucher for your choice of the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam from AAPC, the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam from AHIMA, or the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam from NHA.

Prerequisites and Requirements

There are no prerequisites to take this course. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent to sit for national certification exams. For this reason, it is recommended that you meet this requirement before enrolling.

Upon successful course completion, you can select a voucher for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam offered by AAPC, the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam offered by AHIMA, or the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam offered by NHA.

Online certification exams offered by AAPC and NHA are available only to candidates located in the U.S. AHIMA offers its certification exam in person in the U.S. and internationally.

Certification Pathways

This course prepares you to pursue one of three certification pathways: the CPC credential from AAPC, the CCA credential from AHIMA, or the CBCS credential from NHA.

The CPC focuses on professional medical coding, the CCA demonstrates foundational coding competency across healthcare settings, and the CBCS validates knowledge of medical billing and coding. These options allow you to pursue the certification that most closely aligns with your professional goals.

If you choose the CPC pathway, the course also includes access to AAPC’s Practicode Practicum, which provides hands-on coding practice and can help fulfill experience requirements associated with the CPC-A apprentice designation.
