Southern Studies Conference
February 21-22, 2025
The annual Southern Studies Conference is an interdisciplinary conference on all aspects of the American South, with scholars typically drawn from more than a dozen states and several countries. All events are open to the public on the Auburn University at Montgomery campus. You can submit your paper, panel, poster, or other exhibit proposals using the link below.
Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. Full consideration will be afforded all submissions received by November, 30 2024.

Conference Information
The 2025 conference will be held at Auburn University at Montgomery on Friday, February 21 & Saturday, February 22.
AUM affiliated faculty, staff, students, alumni register here. (must use an aum email address)

AUM Southern Studies Conference
Registrants to the two-day conference enjoy a variety of peer-reviewed panels, two distinguished keynote speakers, and a lecture and exhibition by a visiting artist. In 2020, the Conference will span January 30-February 1st and includes an opening reception the evening of January 30th, a professional session oriented towards graduate student attendees, a graduate student poster session competition, and a voluntary Montgomery-based cultural outing on the afternoon of Saturday, February 1st. Finally, registrants enjoy complimentary breakfasts, lunch, and one dinner.

AUM Southern Studies Conference
Featured Artist: Marcia Weber, Owner, Marcia Weber Art Objects, Original Self Taught, Contemporary Folk, Outsider Art.Weber has been a gallerist in Central Alabama since 1991 and is an expert in self-taught and outsider art, with particular focus on regional figures. Her talk “Visions of the South: Self-taught, visionary, and outsider art” addresses her work and experiences. It occurs on Friday, 5:00-6:00 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 109. This lecture and the accompanying exhibition were generously supported by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The exhibition Visions of the South: Self-taught, Visionary, and Outsider Art will be on view in the Auburn University at Montgomery art gallery from January 9 – February 27, 2019. AUM Southern Studies Conference
Featured Artist: Annie B. Campbell, Assistant Professor, Art and Art History, Auburn University. Professor Campbell’s artworks, executed primarily in various ceramic media, range from installation and freestanding pieces to wall mounted sculpture. She has held prestigious artist residencies at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences in Rabun Gap, GA, Studio 550 in Manchester, NH, and the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Aberdeenshire. She will speak at the conference on her work, and her exhibition will be displayed in the campus’s Goodwyn Gallery from January 29 – March 23, 2018.

Now in its ninth year, the AUM Liberal Arts Conference continues to center its theme on the American South. Registrants to the conference will be able to enjoy a variety of peer-reviewed panels over the course of two days on topics spanning the fields of anthropology, geography, art history, American history, American literature and theater, music history, communication studies, mass communication, and sociology. The conference also will host two distinguished speakers, offer a reading session of poetry and prose from local writers, and display a gallery exhibition.
