The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and all its programs are approved by the Alabama Department of Education.

NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accrediting body for colleges and universities that prepare teachers and other professional personnel for work in elementary and secondary schools. Through its voluntary peer review process, NCATE ensures accredited institutions produce competent, qualified teachers and other professional school personnel. NCATE and SACS Accreditation Information.

CACREP is an independent agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit master’s degree programs.

AUM is one of only 8 institutions in the state of Alabama to be CACREP accredited.  AUM was awarded CACREP accreditation on 7/17/2010. Our accreditation for the Master’s School Counseling and Community Counseling programs expires 10/31/2018.

In the United States, there are two types of accreditation – institutional and specialized.  Institutional looks at the entire institution. Specialized accreditors, such as CACREP, look at professional preparation programs within institutions.  When programs are reviewed by CACREP, there are a few standards that address issues at the institutional level (such as financial aid), but the application and review focuses on the program that offers the graduate degree in counseling.  It is the degree-specific program that holds accreditation, not the department or college in which it is housed. Eligibility for CACREP includes having institutional accreditation, so the institutional issues such as financial viability and resources are addressed.

CAEP Site Visit

The College of Education at Auburn University at Montgomery is hosting an accreditation visit by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) on October 9th, 2020. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the site team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the provider (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).

or by email to [email protected]. Such comments must be within the specified period and based on the core tenets of CAEP accreditation standards of excellence, which recognize that:

  1. In CAEP’s performance-based system, accreditation is based on evidence that demonstrates that teacher candidates know the subject matter and can teach it effectively so that students learn. In the CAEP system, EPPs must prove that candidates can connect theory to practice and be effective in an actual P-12 classroom.
  2. A professional education provider that is accredited by CAEP is expected to be involved in ongoing planning and evaluation; engaged in continuous assessment and development; ensure that faculty and programs reflect new knowledge, practice, and technologies; and be involved in continuous development in response to the evolving world of education and educational reform.
  3. Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the respondent’s relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to the university for comment prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.
