Photography exhibit features faces of AUM
If you stop by the Cason McDermott Art Gallery, you’ll find AUM students, faculty and staff represented within the “About Face Pretty Bones” exhibition by Athens, Georgia-based photographer Amanda E. Corbett.
Corbett visited campus during the Fall 2021 semester to capture tin-type photographs of AUM people. Corbett utilizes an approach developed in the 1850s to create one-of-a-kind images on aluminum. Corbett said her exhibit “focuses on the practice of letting go of fears in regard to aging and loss. The images seek to preserve a likeness of the carapace which houses our souls before time has worn the details away.”
Located in Goodwyn Hall 101, the Cason McDermott Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The current exhibition will be on display through April 21. Department of Fine Arts Chair and Associate Professor Will Fenn said the gallery will be increasing the number of contemporary art exhibits it features each season.

Bright shares insights on vaccines, COVID at symposium
Dr. Rick Bright’s journey to becoming one of the world’s foremost experts on vaccines and public health matters began at Auburn University at Montgomery nearly 30 years ago.
“I remember 28 years ago walking into the doors of AUM as a non-traditional student and wondering if this was the place I would be able to thrive and learn,” said Bright, who earned a biology degree from AUM in 1997 as a transfer student. “I remember the intimidation being an older, non-traditional student and I remember warmth and the support from the faculty and administration on this campus that guided me through and mentored me to this career path that has changed my life.”
That pathway included a master’s degree and doctorate from Emory and a career focus on biodefense, emergency preparedness, and vaccine and diagnostics development. Bright served as the keynote speaker at Friday’s 8th Annual Clinical Laboratory Sciences Symposium hosted by Auburn University at Montgomery Medical & Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
As director of the Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority from 2016-2020, Bright played an integral role of the development of Operation Warp Speed — a public-private partnership aimed at accelerating the development, manufacture and distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines. Bright now serves as CEO of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Pandemic Prevention Institute. He will return to Montgomery in May as AUM’s Spring 2022 Commencement speaker.
Bright was one of four AUM alums who shared their perspective on the COVID-19 pandemic during the recent symposium. The lineup of speakers included Eric Stanford, diagnostic laboratories supervisor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Michael Esco, professor of exercise physiology at the University of Alabama; and Whitney Jerkins, a licensed professional counselor.
Goble turning childhood dreams into reality
AUM junior softball student-athlete Alanna Goble has been absent from more than a few practices and games this season, but there’s a good reason.
Goble, a junior pitcher and nursing major, has been balancing clinicals at Baptist South hospital. The opportunity to gain practical experience in her chosen career field means working 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. shifts on Fridays and Saturdays.
“I have always known I wanted to be a nurse,” said Goble. “I have always loved caring for people. I wanted to be a teacher to be with kids, then I grew out of that, but since I was as young as I could remember, I wanted to be a nurse.”
Even with the disruptions to her competition schedule, Goble has been a valuable player for the Warhawks (27-6, 15-3 in Gulf South Conference play). Goble is 6-1 with a 1.99 earned run average this season. Catch Goble and her teammates at home Saturday and Sunday against Union. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s series finale start at 1 p.m.
Student recording artist earns honors for sound engineering talents
Senior Communication major Macio Malone earned an award for Sound Production/Engineering in the 2021-2022 BEA Festival of Media Arts, an international digital media and broadcast competition for faculty and students at more than 300 universities.
The BEA Festival of Media Arts typically draws more than 1,500 entries each year.
Macio, who records music under the name MC Burn Em, recently discussed his goals as an artist and how fatherhood has shaped his music.
Warhawk Health Services offers free STD testing clinic
In conjunction with Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Awareness Week April 10-15, Warhawk Health Services will offer a free testing clinic for students. Testing will be offered Monday-Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointments are necessary.
The clinic will be closed for lunch each of those days from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, STD Awareness Week serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of STDs and their impact on lives, reduce STD-related stigma, discrimination and fear, and ensure individuals have the knowledge and resources to test for, treat and prevent STDs.
Theatre AUM play offers glimpse into different eras
Catch Theatre AUM’s final performance of “On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning” by Eric Overmyer on Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m.
The play focuses on three female explorers and the diverse beings they encounter during their travels, which take them to different time periods and locations.
Theatre AUM is located in Taylor Center. AUM students, alumni, faculty and staff receive free admission, but masks are required.
Build your resume while helping fellow students
AUM’s Experiential Education & Engagement Center (EEEC) is seeking students interested in becoming Peer Mentors for the 2022-23 school year. Peer Mentors are needed for all courses and subject areas, and will receive $10-per-hour as part-time student workers.
Peer Mentors work in the classrooms of courses they have successfully completed and help current students navigate the subject matter through advice and support. Think of it as being a teaching assistant without the responsibility of grading assignments.
