Warhawk Weekly 8-1: Site work under way; Renewing Shady Street

Site work under way for AUM Science Lab Complex
By the end of 2024, a former state forensics lab at the southwestern edge of the Auburn University at Montgomery campus will be reinvented as a 57,000-square foot Science Lab Complex to benefit all students.
Contractors have spent the summer setting the stage for the complete transformation of the former state lab, which will feature flexible learning and collaborative workspaces. AUM acquired the facility from the Alabama Department of Public Health after it moved the Bureau of Clinical Laboratories to Prattville in January 2021. The finished Science Lab Complex will transform the manner in which AUM students experience biology, chemistry, environmental science and other STEM-connected coursework.
Putting the spotlight on Shady Street’s renewal
Auburn University at Montgomery students, faculty and staff have been helping the City of Montgomery prepare the new Shady Street Park and Trail for use by local residents.
The trail is part of a larger civic effort focused on urban growth and redevelopment and serves as an extension of the Riverfront Greenway Trail.
The City of Montgomery recently highlighted AUM’s contributions to the project, which have ranged from clearance of overgrowth to graphic design.
AUM student-athletes among national leaders in service
AUM student-athletes ranked sixth nationally in NCAA Division II for community service hours, according to a 2022-2023 report released by HelperHelper.
AUM’s student-athletes’ service hours included organization of fundraising events for charities to volunteerism at local schools. The women’s tennis team finished No. 1 nationally for team service hours in that sport, while the basketball and soccer teams placed fifth and eighth, respectively.
Among men’s teams, the tennis team finished No. 1 in its category, while the baseball and basketball teams earned No. 4 and No. 5 rankings. The men’s soccer team finished 10th overall among Division II programs.
