Curtiss, AUM cheerleaders earn NCA honors
Congratulations are in order for Curtiss the Warhawk and the AUM Cheerleading team.
Both earned high honors during last weekend’s National Cheerleading Association Camp in Dallas. Curtiss earned All-American honors as one of the top college mascots at the camp, while the AUM cheerleaders won the Gameday Crowd Segment in their division while advancing to the Gameday finals. It marked the first time in school history that the team has won its division at the camp.

Hughes offers perspective on state congressional map
When national and state media outlets are trying to make sense of Alabama’s political landscape, they frequently turn to AUM associate professor David Hughes for insight.
Hughes, who joined AUM’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration in 2016, recently shared his perspective on efforts to redraw Alabama’s congressional map in accordance with an order from the U.S. Supreme Court. The court’s ruling requires the state to include a second majority- or near-majority black congressional district on its election map.
State legislators have submitted a redrawn map that includes a district with 40 percent black voting age population. Hughes said Alabama’s congressional map will likely have to be resolved by a special master after a three-judge panel reviews the map in federal court in August.
AUM basketball players to sign pro contracts
A pair of former AUM basketball standouts have signed professional contracts with European teams.
Roderick Smith will play for reigning PRVA League champion KK Dubrovnik on Croatia, while James Graham signed a deal with the Unger Steel Oberwart Gunners in Austria’s Osterreichische Basketball Bundesliga.
Smith averaged 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season, while Graham contributed 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
Green Zone training offered to employees
AUM faculty and staff are invited to participate in Green Zone training to help meet the needs of the university’s more than 800 military-affiliated students.
Green Zone training focuses on increasing awareness of the backgrounds and needs of military affiliated students at AUM. Participants will receive a certificate and a green zone sticker to place outside their office space once training is completed.
The session is set for Wednesday, August 2, from 9 – 11 a.m. in Taylor Center 223.
