Warhawk Weekly 11-26: Giving Tuesday; Call for proposals
Giving Tuesday offers opportunities to support AUM, community
From scholarships to donation drives, there are a variety of ways to invest in our community and the success of Auburn University at Montgomery students on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Every year, Giving Tuesday is celebrated as a global generosity movement focused on transforming communities. Here are some ways to get involved and make a difference:
- 12’s Day of Giving: AUM is sponsoring WSFA-TV’s annual food and toy drive benefitting Toys for Tots, Heart of Alabama Food Bank and Hands On River Region’s Christmas Clearinghouse. Volunteers will collect donations of food, toys and money on Friday, Dec. 13, from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Renfroe’s Market on Eastchase Parkway.
- Giving to AUM: Support scholarship opportunities for AUM students, specific colleges and academic programs and other university initiatives by making a tax-deductible gift to AUM.
- River Region United Way: AUM’s employee campaign for River Region United Way will end on Friday, Dec. 13. Employees can return printed pledge forms to Paige Hines in Library 211 or make a gift online by visiting the River Region United Way website. Remember to designate Auburn University at Montgomery as your employer when making a gift.
- University Honors Program Food Pantry: Donate any non-perishable food, hygiene, or school supply items to the UHP Food Pantry or contribute via the food pantry’s Amazon Wish List. Monetary donations to the UHP Food Pantry are also welcome.
Each of these opportunities will allow you to make a meaningful impact and help create opportunities for current and future AUM students.

Locke explores AI in Harvard seminar and new textbook
James Locke, visiting assistant professor of management information systems, was recently invited to teach artificial intelligence (AI) at a Harvard Business School seminar. He also recently signed a contract to coauthor a new AI textbook.
In October, Locke joined faculty from universities across the U.S. to teach AI through case studies. He specifically focused on machine learning, a key field of study within AI. Locke, along with 39 other professors from institutions including Loyola University Chicago, New York University, Tulane University, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin, also explored best practices for teaching STEM complexities to assure technical competence to shape better business thinking and leadership.
Locke is also coauthor of the new textbook “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” written with Rex Kelly Rainer, professor of business analytics and information systems at Auburn University. The textbook includes eight chapters of business-focused assessments on the applications of machine learning, along with over 20 pre-built models and datasets for hands-on student learning. The book also features PowerPoints and videos to support instructors and enhance student comprehension. The textbook, the first to focus on AI in business, has been accepted for publication by Wiley Publishing and is set to be released in Fall 2025.
