Warhawk Weekly 11-19: First GSC soccer title; 3+1 program

Warhawks earn first GSC title in soccer
A first half goal from Benjamin Hoffman, stellar goalkeeping from William Blake and steady play from start-to-finish powered AUM’s men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over West Florida on Saturday and its first-ever conference championship as a Gulf South Conference member.
The Warhawks (11-2-6) earned an automatic berth in the 2024 NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship on Monday. As the No. 6 seed in the 10-team Super Region 2 bracket, AUM will face third-seeded Coker on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. (CST) at Coker Athletic Field in Hartsville, S.C. AUM advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2021.
Blake earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Joining him on the All-Tournament team were Brayden Strait, Sean Keane and Adam Hanson.
Hoffman scored in the 28th minute of the match for the Warhawks, who handed West Florida its first loss since September 5. AUM advanced to the tournament finals after defeating second-seeded Christian Brothers on penalty kicks on Thursday.
There will be a sendoff on Friday at noon outside the AUM Athletics Complex before the team leaves for South Carolina. Stop by to send them off and get a free cupcake!
New ‘3+1 program’ equals possibilities for AUM students
Auburn University at Montgomery and Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy signed a “3+1 Program” agreement last week that establishes a new possibilities for AUM students interested in pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree.
AUM students would work toward completing the prerequisites for entrance to AU’s pharmacy school over three years while still pursuing and receiving their undergraduate degree at AUM. Under the agreement, AUM recognizes the first year of the doctor of pharmacy program as satisfying the requirements for the bachelor’s degree.
AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton, Harrison College of Pharmacy Dean Leigh Ann Ross and Auburn University Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness Robert Boyd were joined at the agreement signing by AUM and Auburn faculty and staff. Three AUM graduates enrolled at the Harrison College of Pharmacy — Juan Rodriguez, Mary Kate Lackey and Rachel Davis (pictured with Curtiss the Warhawk dolls) — also attended the event.

With approximately 40 nationalities represented among its student body and employees, AUM has truly become a global campus. International Education Week, which runs through Friday, offers an opportunity to celebrate the traditions and history of the cultures represented within the campus community.
Remaining events include information tables on The Quad, a scavenger hunt, academic advising sessions, peteca (a Brazilian sport similar to badminton), Tea Around the World and a cricket match.
Celebrating AUM’s ‘First in Flight’ Warhawks
Last week, Governor Kay Ivey signed a proclamation designating the second week of November as First-Generation College Student Celebration Week in Alabama.
AUM’s Warhawk Academic Success Center led the way in writing and submitting the proclamation request not only on the behalf of the first-generation college students that AUM serves, but for the acknowledgement and celebration of every first-generation college student in the state. AUM has built a reputation for being the first choice for first-gen students from Alabama’s River Region by offering a wide range of support services and student organizations that meet the unique needs of those who are “first in flight.”
First-generation students are those whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college degree. Forty percent of Alabama’s college students identify as first-gen, while approximately half of Auburn University at Montgomery’s students meet the criteria.
Attendees at the proclamation signing included: AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton, Provost & Senior Vice Chancellor Mrinal Varma, WASC Associate Director Chanell Davis, Police Chief Brenda Mitchell, Director of Continuing Education & Community Engagement Neal Kelley, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, & Social Work Chair & Associate Professor Kimberly Pyszka, Professor of Communication & Theatre Val Winkelman, First-in-Flight student organization President Sierra Powell, Alpha Alpha Alpha National Honor Society President Eriona Powell and First-in-Flight VP of Finance Kevin Brooks.
Singing the praises of nursing’s perfection
If the sounds of students belting out various karaoke songs from Moore Hall drifted to your corner of campus, it’s because the College of Nursing & Health Sciences had ample reason to party last week.
Students from the college passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become Registered Nurses at a 100 percent pass rate for first-time test-takers. And AUM’s Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program continues to have a 100 percent pass rate on its certification exam.
Connecting students with state agency employers
State agency representatives who participated in last week’s inaugural State of Alabama Day hosted by AUM’s Career Development Center found the opportunity to be valuable for several reasons.
By connecting with AUM administrators, faculty and staff, they learned how AUM’s academic programs can help address their evolving workforce needs. By participating in workshops and career expos for AUM students and alumni, they met career-ready individuals who will shine as interns and full-time employees.
Career Development Center shared his insights on the recent event and its future potential.
