Master of Science in Psychology – Clinical Psychology Track

In-Class

A master’s degree in psychology with a clinical emphasis prepares students to work in a vast number of career fields. The training focuses on the three key components of psychological clinical science: assessment, treatment, and research. Career areas can include testing/psychometry, behavioral health service delivery, data analysis, advising education, corrections, and the military. The master’s of science degree – clinical track will also prepare you to become a licensed psychological technician in the state of Alabama. Assessment is what sets clinical psychology apart from the other mental health professions and is a lucrative career path, hence, assessment is a primary focus of our program. The AUM Master of Science in Psychology is a flexible degree track offering two options for completion. Students may graduate by completing a practicum or executing and defending an original research project (thesis). Students may also be able to complete both a practicum and a thesis. If the thesis and practicum options are both desired, the thesis option will primarily satisfy the graduation requirements, while the practicum will be supplemental and strengthen the academic resume, particularly for application to doctoral programs.

Clinical Thesis Option

Students planning to pursue a doctoral program are strongly recommended to complete a thesis. The thesis option is designed to help students learn to produce, present, and publish original research through a guided process with a faculty mentor.

Practicum Option

The practicum option is recommended for students interested in working in the field upon graduation. The goal of the practicum is to provide clinical fieldwork experience in a professional work environment. Without a practicum, students may find it difficult to obtain employment in direct clinical services career fields.

To complete the Master’s of Science in Psychology – Clinical Track, graduate students are required to successfully complete the graduate comprehensive exam. The comprehensive exam demonstrates competency in material learned during graduate training and prepares students for the psychology licensing exam.

Application period: Feb – June 15, with a decision letter in early July.
