Bachelor of Arts in Biology
In-Class

The Bachelor of Arts in Biology degree at AUM was designed to mirror its Bachelor of Science counterpart, but with several differences. The BA in Biology is for those students whose career plans include:

  • Teaching science at the K-12 level by coupling their Biology degree with a minor in Education, and/or…
  • Going directly into the workforce, bypassing graduate studies.

For those planning to teach, this degree is perfectly paired with the innovative AUMTeach program, which was designed to help relieve the vast teacher shortage in Alabama and beyond. AUMTeach is a minor in Education for those majoring in Biology (and other STEM-related fields), but with some attractive benefits including an automatic scholarship for the Education minor and an Alabama teaching certificate.

AUM students in the BA in Biology program are not required to take part in AUMTeach (and, in fact, can choose any minor), but if you do, you’ll have an opportunity to serve others, earn more money, owe less debt, and get a leg-up to attending a graduate or professional school, should you pursue that option.

If your degree focus is in one of the S.T.E.M. fields—science, pre-engineering, computer science or mathematics—AUM provides an automatic scholarship to minor in Education and earn an Alabama teaching certificate. This unique program is called “AUMTeach.”

We Help You Succeed

With small class and lab sizes, you’ll get to know your professors in a way that you couldn’t at larger universities. Plus, AUM offers tutoring, peer mentoring, and other support to help you succeed.

We Prepare You For A Rewarding Career

Many students in the BA in Biology program choose to teach K-12. But you’ll also have the knowledge and skills to seek jobs in the private sector or government.

We Encourage You To Be Hands On

You’ll get plenty of lab time in classes such as Biology I and II, General and Organic Chemistry, and several electives.

Points of Pride

  • Students can take semesters abroad in places like Costa Rica and South Africa and summers abroad in the Galapagos Islands.
  • Faculty members currently have grants from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Nearly 20 percent of students do research with a faculty member and many go on to publish papers and travel to conferences.

Soaring Warhawks

  • Chris Norris was just accepted into graduate school at Auburn University to study population genetics in lizards.
  • Kaori Knights teaches flow cytometry for VMR.
  • Anna Parker and Aya Zaeid have recently graduated from law school.
  • After his tenure working at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Greg Vinson  is now a professional angler.
  • Matthew Heartsill just accepted a job at the U.S. Geological Survey as a hydrologic technician.
  • Nathan Frazier graduated with a masters in Poultry Science from Auburn University and recently completed his Ph.D. in Colorado..
  • Andrew Nichols was recently accepted into graduate school and will be pursuing a Ph.D.
  • Amanda Strozier is pursuing her master’s in Aquatic Ecology at Auburn University after completing an internship in South Africa to study sharks.

Customize Your Degree

  • When you pair this degree with an Education minor through the AUMTeach program,  you’ll have access to the K-12 teacher job market, where the shortage in STEM-related teachers is an opportunity to serve the community AND earn up to $20,000 more than new teachers in non-STEM fields.
  • Plus, even if you don’t plan a long-term teaching career, your science expertise and teaching experience is a solid resume-builder to enhance your graduate or professional school applications, should you decide to apply.
  • You can further customize this degree by joining the University Honors Program, a diverse community of students who take classes together, work on community service projects, and travel the U.S. and abroad.

Rewarding Occupations and Job Growth

The Bachelor of Science in Biology prepares students for a wide range of jobs, including research positions and post-graduate options such as graduate school and health-related professional schools. The Bachelor of Arts in Biology is mainly for those who want to go directly into the workforce or into K-12 education. There are several curriculum differences between the programs; for instance, BA majors have fewer mathematics requirements and don’t have to take Biochemistry, Microbiology, or Physics.

It helps to have a solid background in high school science topics, but don’t worry. Your interest in biology is more important than your previous class load. Besides, AUM has free tutoring and our professors are known to spend extra time on any student who needs it.

AUMTeach is a special minor in Education that provides an automatic scholarship to participants as well as an Alabama teaching certificate. It is specially focused on AUM students who are majoring in STEM-related fields–which is where the current teacher shortage is the most acute.

Graduates in STEM fields are a high priority for all employers but with a teaching certificate, you’ll have access to a new job market (even if you don’t plan a long-term teaching career), a solid resume-builder to enhance your graduate or professional school applications, and other benefits.

Due to the fact that demand for teachers of STEM subjects is high in Alabama, you can earn up to an additional $20,000 a year compared to those who teach other subject matter. As far as non-teaching jobs, factors that determine your income include experience, personal initiative, and your geographical location. See sample salaries on this page, under Rewarding Occupations and Job Growth.
