Management Information Systems (MIS) is the study of how Information Technology (IT) helps businesses and organizations achieve their strategic goals and operational objectives. Organizations are constantly seeking individuals who understand how technology can be used to improve operational efficiencies and drive smarter business decisions. At Auburn University at Montgomery, our mission is to educate and prepare students with both IT aptitude and business understanding that will qualify them for successful, high-demand careers in the IT field, producing graduates who don’t just understand technology but know how to strategically deploy it to give organizations a competitive advantage.
At the undergraduate level, AUM offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Information Systems, available in three optional tracks: General Information Systems, Enterprise Network Management, and Enterprise Data Management and Applications. Students learn to analyze, design, develop, and maintain information systems that support business operations across every function of an organization. With small class sizes, nine full-time PhD faculty members, hands-on training in high-end technology labs, and access to quality internship and career networking opportunities through AUM’s strong relationships in the Montgomery-area job market, undergraduate students graduate with both the technical credentials and the practical experience employers are looking for.
For those ready to advance their careers, AUM’s Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MSMIS) is a STEM-designated graduate program that combines technical knowledge with management skills, offered with three concentrations: Information Systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Business and Data Analytics. As part of the SAP University Alliances program, students gain direct access to the SAP Business Suite, including SAP ERP, giving them hands-on experience with the same enterprise software used by major organizations worldwide to manage accounting, human capital, materials, and sales operations. Students in the program also have the opportunity to conduct advanced research in AUM’s Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory, which houses the most powerful computing capabilities in the state.

AUM’s Information Systems programs let students focus their studies around their career goals. At the undergraduate level, AUM offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Information Systems. Students build on the business core with major coursework in computer languages, database systems, data communications, and IS project management, and then choose four approved electives to deepen their expertise in a chosen area. At the graduate level, the Master of Science in Management Information Systems is built on a four-course core covering data analytics for competitive advantage, enterprise information systems, information security, and innovation strategy. Students then complete six additional courses, choosing from areas including data mining, data systems, applied business analytics, systems analysis and design, and enterprise process integration with SAP.
Yes. AUM’s Master of Science in Management Information Systems is STEM-designated, which carries real consequences for international students: eligible graduates may apply for a 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training beyond the standard 12 months, giving up to three years of U.S. professional experience after graduation. Not every regional MIS master’s carries this designation. Some comparable programs limit their graduates to 12 months. The designation also signals to employers that the program meets rigorous technical and analytical standards, thereby strengthening the degree’s value in a competitive job market.
Data analytics is built into the core of AUM’s Information Systems programs rather than offered as an optional add-on. Undergraduates complete a two-course business statistics sequence and a required database systems course, then choose from approved electives to deepen their focus.
At the graduate level, every student takes Data Analytics for Competitive Advantage, a required course that establishes how organizations use analytics and big data as strategic resources, taught through cases that emphasize how companies turn data into advantage. Students go further through coursework in data mining methods, data systems and database management, data visualization, and applied business analytics, which covers predictive modeling, quantitative and qualitative analysis, digital marketing analysis, and presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
The emphasis throughout is on translation: not just producing an analysis, but making it usable by the people who decide. In an environment where most organizations hold more data than they can act on, that skill is among the most valuable an MIS professional brings to an employer.
AUM is a member of SAP University Alliances, which gives students direct access to SAP Business Suite, the enterprise software that runs finance, human capital, materials management, and sales operations at major corporations and government agencies. Rather than reading about enterprise systems, students work inside them. That access runs through the graduate curriculum, including coursework in enterprise information systems, applied business analytics, and enterprise process integration with SAP.
Graduate students also have access to AUM’s Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory, built around an NVIDIA DGX Station A100 in partnership with NVIDIA and Mark III Systems, where student projects have included healthcare analytics on large clinical datasets and applied machine learning research. For students entering a job market where employers screen for demonstrable tool experience, working directly in the systems that employers actually run is a distinct advantage.
The field of information systems sits at the intersection of technology and business decision-making, and the roles reflect that. AUM graduates pursue positions including computer and information systems manager, computer systems analyst, IT risk manager, data analytics manager, and information security analyst, across healthcare, finance, government, technology, and manufacturing.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in computer and information technology occupations to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2024 to 2034, with roughly 317,700 openings projected each year. The median annual wage for the group was $105,990 in May 2024, compared with $49,500 across all occupations.
Two occupations align especially closely with an MIS degree. Computer and information systems managers, a category that includes chief information officer, chief technology officer, and MIS director, are projected to grow 15% through 2034, with a median wage of $171,200. Computer systems analysts had a median wage of $103,790 with an expected growth of 9% through 2034 (BLS classifies 9% as much faster than average (all occupations: 3%). Additionally, the BLS observes that some employers require or prefer a graduate degree for these roles. AUM’s MIS program combines business coursework with technical training.

AI is changing which technology work is valuable, not eliminating the need for people who manage technology. The distinction matters, and the federal data shows it clearly.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of computer programmers will decline over the 2024–2034 decade, citing the automation of repetitive programming tasks. Over the same period, it projects that computer and information systems managers will grow 15%, which is much faster than average, and identifies AI adoption itself as a driver, because organizations deploying AI need people who can plan, govern, and integrate it.
The change from programming to managing reflects what AI does well and what humans do well. Automation handles routine, codified tasks efficiently. It does not decide which business problems are worth solving, evaluate whether a system justifies its cost, navigate the security and regulatory implications, or lead an organization through adoption. Those are the skills an MIS degree develops.
AUM’s curriculum is built for that reality. Students work directly in enterprise systems including SAP Business Suite, study information security and risk governance, and learn to align technology decisions with organizational strategy. This judgment-based work orchestrates the tasks AI performs.
AUM’s Department of Information Systems is home to ten full-time PhD faculty members who are not only exceptional educators but also contributors to scholarly research in areas that directly impact the field. Faculty research explores how IT-enabled services help companies improve organizational efficiency and drive strategic innovation; the impact of electronic health records and technology-based decision-making on public health outcomes; information privacy and security; social media analytics; and recommendation systems. Dr. Amoroso is Distinguished Teaching Professor of Innovation and Strategy at Auburn University Montgomery, Alabama, Founder and CEO of Axcell LLC Consulting Group. Dr. Amoroso received his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Dr. Amoroso has authored 54 refereed journal articles, 12 refereed book chapters and 88 conference proceedings, and 5 books. He has been Research Fellow at Asian Institute of Management in Manila, Philippines and Visiting Professor of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, Japan. He has been Visiting Professor at Tokyo Tech University, Japan, Tsukuba University, Japan, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra Australia, and INFOTEC, Mexico City. His working experience included working in GE Capital as a director of Enterprise Solutions and with Solista/GartnerGroup as a consulting partner. Dr. Amoroso is currently working in Japan and the Philippines to consult with telecom organizations on consumer adoption and the mobile strategy ecosystem. He worked with the Center for the Commercialization of Advanced Technologies (CCAT) in Washington D.C. and San Diego where he commercialized over 24 products and assisted in the start up of 14 new companies.
Dr. Amoroso has published in journals such as Journal of Management Information Systems, Data Base, Information & Management, Asian Pacific Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology Management, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Management, Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations, International Journal of E-Business Research, International Journal of Technology Diffusion, and International Journal of Asian Business and Information Management. Dr. Amoroso is on the editorial board of key journals and Associate Editor for the Journal of E-Adoption and Information Systems Management Journal. He was inducted into the Who’s Who Worldwide in 1995 for contributions to international organizations changing the distribution of technology information within the Pacific Rim.
Dr. Amoroso conducts seminars and/or teaches in the areas of strategy, innovation and creativity, big data with data analytics, data analysis, leadership, change management, HR management, business process modeling, competitive intelligence, and project management. Dr. Amoroso has consulted with over 67 international organizational executives (such as GE Japan, BMW Japan, Globe and Smart telecommunication firms in the Philippines, and banks and financial institutions) working with CEOs and CIOs to develop strategic plans, leadership development and marketing strategies, enterprise resource management systems, change management programs, and projects for information technology. Dr. Amoroso is currently working in Japan and the Philippines to consult with telecom organizations on consumer adoption and the mobile strategy ecosystem.

Dr. Xiaoyun (Sharon) He is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at Auburn University at Montgomery. She received her Ph.D. in Management with a concentration in Information Technology from Rutgers University. Dr. He has taught a variety of courses including Java/C++ Programming, Information/Network Security, Data Mining, Introduction to MIS, Principles of MIS, Managing Systems, Technology, and Data, to name a few. Dr. He’s research examines both technical and strategic aspects pertaining to information technology and management. Her specific areas of research include Information Privacy and Security, Social Media Platforms and Analytics, Recommendation Systems, and Pedagogical Practices. Her research in these areas has led to over thirty publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Jongheon Kim is an Associate Professor in Information Systems at Auburn University Montgomery. He completed a B.S. in Biotech Engineering from Ajou University, Suwon, Korea, and received a B.S. in Economics from the University of Iowa. He earned his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska, USA. He has mainly worked on the personal utility and human interaction of Information Systems using behavioral theories. His research topics include social network systems, mobile platforms, virtual reality, cloud business, etc.

Dr. Oh earned his MS and Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from the University of Alabama, following his undergraduate education at Pukyong National University in South Korea, where he received dual degrees in Business Administration (BA) and Physics (BS). He began his teaching career at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, instructing Business Quantitative Methods, before joining the Statistics faculty at Auburn University Montgomery in 2018.
Dr. Oh’s research focuses on time series econometrics, business analytics, and statistical computing. His work has been published in various academic journals, including Computational Statistics, Empirical Economics, Applied Economics, and Communication in Statistics— Simulation and Computation, among others. He also actively serves as a reviewer for several academic journals.
