Rudolph to share story of survival, healing at MLK Reflections Breakfast

Sarah Rudolph - Author and ActivistAfter being rescheduled by severe winter weather in January, AUM’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Reflections Breakfast will feature author, activist and 16th Street Baptist Church bombing survivor Sarah Collins Rudolph on Friday, March 7, at 8 a.m., in Taylor Center 230.

The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Attendees are asked to register in advance.

Rudolph was 12 when the KKK’s bombed Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, killing her sister, 14-year-old Addie Mae, and three other girls.

Rudolph, often referred to as the “fifth little girl,” will discuss the terrorist attack and how the Birmingham community united to fight hate in the aftermath of the bombing.

Rudolph still carries physical and emotional scars from the church bombing. She lost vision in one of her eyes due to the blast and eventually had to get a glass eye. Three of the victims lost in the blast were eulogized by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., at their funeral. While the bombing served as a catalyst for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, justice was not fully served for nearly 40 more years.

From 1977 to 2002, KKK members Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., Bobby Frank Cherry, Herman Frank Cash and Robert Edward Chambliss, were convicted for their roles in the bombings.

Personal loss inspires senior’s pursuit of social work degree

Emily Kelley’s decision to pursue a career in social work was shaped, in part, by a cousin’s experience in the foster care system. As she pursues a bachelor’s degree, she is also gaining valuable experience as a student representative on the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) – Alabama Chapter Board.

“I’m not so prideful to think I will be the person who changes the whole system, but any change I can make big or small could make a difference for the future,” she said.
