Biology and Environmental Science

Through teaching, research and service, the Department of Biology and Environmental Science seeks to advance understanding of the sciences at all levels, from molecules to ecosystems. Biology education at AUM strives to strengthen core disciplinary knowledge and to foster synergies that arise from the relationships students build with our creative and collaborative faculty.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry offers Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry (General) and a Professional Chemistry option.  These programs provide excellent preparation for jobs in chemical industry, application to medical, pharmacy, dental and optometry professional schools as well as graduate school in Chemistry.  You can earn the qualifications to become a Forensic Scientist.

Computer Science & Computer Information Systems

The Computer Science & Computer Information Systems Department offers bachelor degree focused on the skills needed for a successful career in Computer Science.  The master degrees offered at AUM include Cyber systems and Information Security programs.

Mathematics

The Mathematics Department offers an exciting and distinctive bachelor degree in mathematics.  The department also offers an undergraduate degree in secondary education with an emphasis in Mathematics through cooperation with the College of Education, as well as, a pre-engineering focused tract.

Psychology

The psychology major offers students a robust education in scientific psychology. Some students will use the major as a stepping-stone to graduate school in psychology.  Others will use it as preparation for law school or a future career in education, counseling or business.  In addition, our research labs can help you develop essential critical thinking and data analysis skills.

Geographic Information Systems Certificate

In addition to a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, AUM offers a GIS certificate designed to satisfy the educational component for certification by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI), a nationally and internationally recognized certification organization.

AUM’s College of Sciences provides students with access to modern research facilities and specialized laboratories designed to support inquiry across a broad range of scientific disciplines. Our research infrastructure supports work in areas including biology, chemistry, environmental science, computer science, and data-driven fields such as bioinformatics and computational analysis. These facilities serve as living learning environments where students and faculty collaborate to address some of the most pressing scientific challenges of our time, from public health and environmental sustainability to emerging technologies and beyond. The opening of our new, 57,000 square foot Science and Technology Complex in January, 2025 is a clear example of this investment.  Housing modern Biology and Chemistry teaching labs, and expansive new biomedical research labs, the new science complex has opened new doors to research for our faculty and students. These new facilities are as good as any in the state of Alabama. We also have a number of competitive funding sources for students that could allow them to get paid to do research in the summer or during the academic year.

In addition to our core degree programs, students have the opportunity to explore specialized tracks in emerging fields such as big data, bioinformatics, personalized medicine, and environmental science. The most recent programmatic additions include undergraduate degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Information Technology and Cybersecurity, and graduate programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
