AUM welcomes environmental activist for Juneteenth

Auburn University at Montgomery will recognize Juneteenth by hosting a brunch for faculty, staff and students on Tuesday, June 18. As a federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans after the Civil War.

The brunch will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Taylor Center 221-223. Catherine Coleman Flowers, an African American environmental and climate justice activist, will be the event’s guest speaker.

Flowers is the founding director of the Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise. As part of her advocacy work, she brings attention to the largely invisible problem of inadequate waste and water sanitation infrastructure in Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and poor rural communities across the United States.

A powerful storyteller and communicator, Flowers has advocated for environmental justice in moving testimony before the United Nations and the U.S. Congress, framing access to clean water and sanitation as a civil and human right.

In 2022, Flowers received the Harvard Law School Horizon Award for her contributions to environmental policy. In 2020, she received a Genius Grant from the MacArthur Foundation, which supports creative people and institutions committed to building a more just and peaceful world. She also was named a 2020 McArthur Fellow for Environmental Health and Advocacy.

Registration is required for the Juneteenth brunch. RSVP online by Thursday, June 13.

The brunch is sponsored by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation entitled “From Civil Rights to Civic Virtue: Forming Character through Community”, AUM’s Experiential Education and Engagement Center and AUM’s Office of Human Resources Affirmative Action and EEO.

AUM will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

A few other key points about the Loaner Laptop Program:

  • Loaner laptops are only available to currently enrolled AUM students
  • Students will be contacted with a pickup date and time after they complete the online registration form

  • Laptops can be picked up within 48 hours of a scheduled appointment. Laptops that are not picked up during this time will be returned to the university inventory
  • Laptops are loaned for 14 days per semester. Students may request one additional 5-day renewal one week after the return of the laptop assigned during the initial loan period
  • Laptops must be returned on or before the specified due date. Non-refundable late fees will be applied to students’ accounts — $50 per day for the first five business days in which a loaned computer is late. After the initial 5-day period, the student’s account will be charged for the full replacement cost of the laptop — $750, plus previously assessed late fees. All fees are non-refundable
