Warhawk Weekly 12-10: Celebrate the Fall Class of 2024; Through Frank’s lens

AUM celebrating success of more than 600 graduates

Auburn University at Montgomery will celebrate the success of more than 630 students during a pair of Fall Commencement ceremonies on Saturday at the AUM Athletics Complex.

More than 630 students are expected to earn degrees, marking one of the largest graduating classes in university history. Graduates of the Colleges of Business and Nursing and Health Sciences, as well as the University College, will be recognized at 10 a.m. Graduates of the Colleges of Education, Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, and Sciences will follow at 2 p.m.

Experience Montgomery Chief Destination Officer Ron Simmons, an AUM alum, will address graduates during both ceremonies. Simmons guides efforts to enhance local tourism for the destination marketing arm of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. A native of Montgomery, Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree from AUM with an emphasis in marketing and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves from AUM’s ROTC program in 1987.

During the morning ceremony, AUM will award a pair of posthumous degrees – a Bachelor of Science in business administration to the late Austin Collett and a Master of Science in Management of Information Systems to the late Sujith Babu Gunturu.

Each college has selected outstanding students as student marshals for commencement. The students are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and citizenship. AUM’s student marshals are:

Through the lens of “Mr. Frank”

Let’s have a Frank conversation.

Since 1988, AUM photographer Frank Williams has captured more than 500,000 photos of students, faculty, staff, alumni and various visitors – including a former president and presidential candidates and a reigning Miss America. He will photograph his final commencement ceremony on Saturday and, after more than 34 years of service to AUM, retire on December 31.

We couldn’t let him leave without telling the story of the man who has devoted so many years to telling the stories of AUM’s people and programs.

Preparations continue for opening of new facility

New science facility signage.The move-in process for the university’s new Science & Technology Complex will begin on Monday.

Admiral movers will begin transitioning items from College of Sciences administrative and faculty offices, as well as lab materials, from Goodwyn Hall to the new facility. The facility will accommodate students when Spring semester classes on January 13, 2025.

McDermott Gallery features student work

Rebekah Cavnar’s exhibit, “The Vitality of Origin,” will be featured at the Cason McDermott Art Gallery through December 14, with special exhibition hours following Saturday’s commencent.

Canvar is a candidate for the bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in painting and drawing. Canvar’s work focuses on “the cotton and equipment used in the [Pratt Cotton Gin Company].”

The gallery is open Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cavnar’s exhibition was produced under the guidance of Associate Professor Andrew Hairstans.

Warhawks hit road for conference games

AUM Women's Basketball faced off against Trevecca Nazarene University.AUM’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel to face a pair of Gulf South Conference opponents on Saturday and Monday after splitting a pair of conference games at home last week.

The Warhawks will visit Delta State on Saturday, with the women and men tipping off at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. AUM will face Mississippi College on Monday with games at 2 and 4.

The AUM women (3-4, 1-1) defeated Trevecca Nazarene, 73-71 in overtime, last Thursday before falling to 13th-ranked Lee University over the weekend. The AUM men (4-3, 1-1) lost by 1 point to Trevecca before a 74-66 win over Lee.

Phi Kappa Phi welcomes new initiates

AUM’s Phi Kappa Phi recognized 22 Fall 2024 initiates during a ceremony last week.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Fall 2024 initiates include: Paul Arrington, Kevin D. AUM’s free math placement program can help students save time and tuition costs. Students can take math placement tests on the following dates in Goodwyn Hall 115:

The awards recognize library faculty and staff for their outstanding dedication to activities and initiatives that enhance library services. Nominees are celebrated for their commitment to providing or improving access to library resources, as well as their efforts to offer quality recommendations that result in more efficient and/or more cost-effective library operations.

One AUMazing library faculty member and staff member will be selected for the honor.
