Haunted house, costume parade, festival highlight Shriek Week

AUM’s annual Shriek Week tradition will offer a variety of events that will get students, faculty and staff into the Halloween spirit.

The calendar includes the Early Learning Center’s Halloween parade, a haunted house, pumpkin carving and a Day of the Dead observance. The remaining schedule offers the following:

Today

6 p.m. – “Haunted House: AUM Gone Mad” in Taylor Center 230 with AUMLive, Spectrum and SWOT

Wednesday

11 a.m. – “Ghosts and Tarots” in Taylor Center 230 with Student Affairs
1 p.m. – “Creepy Coloring” in Taylor Center Lobby with Student Involvement
2 p.m. – “Pumpkin Decorating” in Goodwyn Hall Breezeway with the National Alliance on Mental Illness
6 p.m. – “Halloweentown” screening in Taylor Center 230 with SGA

Thursday

9 a.m.-11 a.m. – “Dia de los Muertos” in Taylor Center 230 with the Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work and the Department of History & World Cultures
9 a.m.-Noon – “Carve with CLASS” on The Quad. Join the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences for Halloween pumpkin carving.
10:30 a.m. – Early Learning Center Halloween Parade. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to line sidewalks of The Quad as pre-schoolers from the ELC show off their costumes and collect candy, stickers, balloons, notepads, pencils and other goodies.
11 a.m.-1 p.m. – “Zombie Prom” at the AUM Library Tower. Remember to wear your costume.
1-4 p.m. – Campus Activities Board Halloween Festival on The Quad

Distance Learning Week trains focus on artificial intelligence

NDLW FlyerIn support of National Distance Learning Week, AUM’s Office of Distance Education will host a series of free online workshops November 4-8 that focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other topics in online learning.

Topics will include AI’s transformative impact on higher education and potential changes AI and machine learning may drive in education, as well as our daily lives. Virtual sessions will be offered at 9 a.m. each day and are open to AUM employees and students.

Volleyball carries two-match win streak into homestand

AUM’s volleyball team will play a pair of home matches this week after earning back-to-back road wins last week at West Alabama and Mississippi College. The Warhawks will host Christian Brothers Friday at 6 p.m. and Union on Saturday at 2 p.m.

In other AUM Athletics action:

Cross Country: AUM’s men finished fifth at last weekend’s Gulf South Conference Championships, while the women finished 10th. Sophomore Dalton Benefield led the AUM men, finishing the 8K race in 25:10.0, which shaved a minute off his time in last year’s GSC Championship. Elizabeth Blitch led the AUM women in the 6K race with a time of 25:81.1.

Men’s Soccer: AUM (7-2-5 overall, 5-2-2 in GSC), a 3-0 winner over Union on Sunday, has clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament. The Warhawks will close out regular season play with road games at Delta State (Friday) and Mississippi College (Sunday).

Women’s Soccer: AUM (4-8-2, 2-7-1 in GSC) spit a pair of matches last week against Christian Brothers and Union, but will try to close out the regular season on a high note with road matches at Delta State (Friday) and Mississippi College (Sunday).

Exploring the creative process of poetry

AUM’s Department of English & Philosophy will welcome poet Nicholas Molbert to campus for a discussion of the craft of poetry and the creative process.

The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at 6:30 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 112.

Molbert is the author of “Altars of Spine and Fraction: Poems,” as well as two poetry chapbooks from Foundlings Press – “Goodness Gracious” and “Cocodrie Elegy.” His work as been featured in the Cincinnati Review and Mississippi Review, among others.

Celebrating AUM’s pre-service educators

The College of Education recognized more than 40 of its pre-service teachers last week at its second Symposium & Pinning Ceremony. Education students, faculty and staff heard from Alabama High School Athletic Association Executive Director Heath Harmon.

Students who are seeking career outlets for STEM-related degrees (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are invited to learn more about AUMTeach, an academic minor that offers a pathway to Alabama teaching certification.

Observe a STEM lesson from AUMTeach students on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in Taylor Center 221-223. Connect with AUMTeach faculty and staff and learn more about AUMTeach coursework.

View the works of local artists

There’s still time to catch the “Imagination Station” exhibit at the Cason McDermott Art Gallery in Goodwyn Hall. The juried exhibition features the work of emerging local artists ages 13 to 62.

Developed by local high school student Harmony Koda and brought to life with the help of AUM Department of Fine Arts Chair Will Fenn, the Imagination Station invited unestablished artists from Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties to submit original work for consideration. Their work will be on display through October 31.

The McDermott Gallery is open Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
