AUM student-athletes recognized for community engagement excellence

AUM has been named one of 26 schools nationwide selected as finalists for the 2026 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. The award recognizes initiatives that exemplify the Division II philosophy of community engagement, service, and student-athlete leadership.

AUM earned recognition for its partnership with TOPSoccer and Dream Court, an initiative supporting adaptive sports opportunities for youth with physical and intellectual disabilities. More than 45 AUM student-athletes volunteered over 500 hours, assisting with soccer and tennis activities that fostered inclusion, confidence, and meaningful engagement within the Montgomery community.

Finalists for the Award of Excellence were selected by a committee of athletics administrators and the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC members will also select the top three honorees, which will be announced later this month during the Division II business session at the 2026 NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C.

Plemmons to share how research affects policy change

Angela Plemmons' headshot.AUM’s Department of Economics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will welcome Alicia Plemmons, assistant professor of general business at West Virginia University, for the talk “How Research Affects Policy Change” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in Taylor Center 223.

Plemmons will explore the connection between economic research and public policy, drawing on her experience serving as an expert witness during state legislative sessions. Her work focuses on health care policy, labor market regulations, entrepreneurship, and occupational licensing.

A regulatory economist, Plemmons also serves as director of the Knee Regulatory Research Center and director of the Center for Free Enterprise at West Virginia University.

The event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Find your rhythm in an AUM music ensemble

Got vocal chops or instrumental skills? AUM invites you to turn your talent into tradition by joining one of its music ensembles: AUM Spirit Band, AUMcappella, or AUM Choir. All three groups are now accepting new members.

  • AUMcappella is a select, all-female a cappella group that performs at campus events and community gatherings. All members receive scholarships.
  • AUM Choir (Chorus) is a mixed ensemble with no audition required. Sing everything from classical to pop, with one end-of-semester concert each fall and spring.
  • AUM Spirit Band brings the energy to home men’s and women’s basketball games and special events. Open to all students with band experience, the group practices Thursday evenings, and members receive a $500 per semester scholarship.

Interested in auditioning or joining? Contact Chapel McCullough, director of the ensembles, at [email protected].
