Celebrating AUM’s outstanding ‘first-gen’ scholars
Being a first-generation college student isn’t solely about earning a degree. It’s also about proving what’s possible for those who will follow.
Auburn University at Montgomery recently recognized several of its outstanding First-Gen Warhawk scholars during an induction ceremony for Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha), the national honor society for students who are the first members of their families to attend college.
AUM’s newest Tri-Alpha inductees included:
- Jazzamise Baker (Sport Management)
- Damien Bogan (Mathematics)
- Jalen Bradley (Exercise Science)
- Zhaia Dennis (Criminal Justice)
- Madison Lawrence (Nursing)
- Kirstin Devine Paulk (Sociology/Psychology)
- Angel Smith (Social Work)
- Neal Kelley (Faculty/Staff inductee)
- Bridgette Harper (honorary inductee)
Nearly half of AUM’s students identify as first-generation college attendees. To qualify for Tri-Alpha membership, students must complete at least 60 credit hours with a 3.2 minimum GPA and come from a family where neither parent nor guardian has earned a bachelor’s degree.
With many of its faculty and staff members identifying as first-generation college graduates, AUM provides a variety of support systems that help students navigate the college experience and build community. The university’s First Generation Warhawk Initiative offers a sense of structure for first-time college students from first-generation families. The university’s roster of student organizations also includes the First in Flight Club, which supports first generation Warhawks on their educational journeys.
