Theatre AUM brings revolutionary playwright’s story to stage in ‘The Mercy Project’
Theatre AUM is bringing the words and legacy of influential American Revolution-era writer and political satirist Mercy Otis Warren to the stage this October with its production of “The Mercy Project: A Showcase Honoring Playwright Mercy Otis Warren.”

Directed by Distinguished Research Professor Val Winkelman, “The Mercy Project” features a student cast exploring Warren’s life and work as a playwright, poet, historian and political satirist during a transformative period in American history. Through their performances, Theatre AUM students will bring Warren’s work to life, illustrating the ways she used her writings to challenge conventions, give voice to political ideas and engage with the social issues of her era.
“We chose to create this original theatrical production of The Mercy Project to celebrate the 250 years of American Independence through the inspirational words of Mercy Otis Warren,” Winkelman said. “By sharing a collection of her works, we hope that her perseverance and contributions will be recognized, appreciated, and valued.”
Born in 1728 in Barnstable, Massachusetts, Warren developed a powerful political voice during an era when women were largely excluded from public political discourse. Through plays, poetry and political commentary, she engaged with the ideas and conflicts surrounding the American Revolution and challenged the political figures and policies of her time.
Warren was connected to many prominent figures of the Revolutionary era and used satire as a vehicle for political expression. Her writings offered commentary on liberty, government and the direction of the emerging nation at a time when women had few opportunities to participate publicly in political debate.
