International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation is designed to assist you with the transition to the United States. You will learn about academics in the United States, hear from professors, meet fellow students, and take a tour of the campus and Montgomery, Alabama. Breakfast and lunch is provided each day. It is imperative to bring your passport, Form I—20, and immunization/vaccine form to orientation.

Orientation days are planned to provide you with the necessary information to get around campus comfortably and find where to go. Not only will you get to know others who are attending AUM, but also meet the administration and staff of AUM. Orientation day is your day to become a Warhawk.

At orientation, you will:

  • Tour your campus
  • Meet future friends and classmates
  • Learn about student services
  • Get your questions answered
  • Learn about life in the U.S.A.
  • Learn about academics in the U.S.A.

Orientation is required for all new AUM students.

International Orientation Schedule

Day 1 – Wednesday, August 11th, 2021

9:00 – 9:25 Check-in Taylor Center 230
Welcome to AUM! We will make appointments for your Immigration Check-In, you will receive a “Welcome to Campus” Information folder, and meet your international advisors from the Office of Global Initiatives. Breakfast bags are available for students. **Appointments start on Tuesday, June 1st for the Immigration Check-In.

9:25 – 9:35 Welcome to AUM Taylor Center 230
Dr. Mrinal Mugdh Varma will address the new international students/welcome them to AUM.

9:35 – 9:45 Welcome to AUM Taylor Center 230
Dr. Sameer Pande will address the new international students/welcome them to AUM. Taylor Center 230

9:45 – 10:05 Warhawk Health Services – Lindsey Barton will speak on the services that the Health Center on campus provides as well as COVID-19 Testing and the vaccine.

10:05 – 10:15 Insurance Enrollment Taylor Center 230
Laurie Bellinger presents information on the United Healthcare Insurance Plan for international students. We will give tips on the enrollment process, how to login to your United account online, and the guidelines of the insurance.

10:15 – 10:50 Life in the USA Taylor Center 230
Jason Crutchfield presents on Montgomery, AL, customs of the United States, campus resources such as Student Health Services, Counseling and Health Promotions, Food Pantry, etc.

10:50 – 11:00 Break

11:00 – 11:25 Immigration Requirements Taylor Center 230
Ayush Taneja presents requirements for your Student Visa status while at AUM. Details include: F-1 status, working on or off campus, the number of classes you must take and more.

11:25 – 12:10 Academics in the U.S.A. Taylor Center 230
Dr. Paul Fox will address the importance of the core curriculum at AUM and also the importance of using your own work while at AUM through an interactive workshop.

12:10 – 1:15 Lunch Taylor Center 230
BurgerFi Box lunch is provided for each student to take away.

1:15 – 3:00 Transit Tour and Shopping Trip (Optional) Outside of Taylor Center
Shopping to purchase items needed for your daily life/ tour the surrounding area of AUM.

1:15 – 3:30 Math Placement Test Math Lab – Taylor Center 310
Requirement for registering for classes. Need student ID and student number to take the test.

Day 2 – Thursday, August 12th, 2021

9:30 – 9:40 – Student Affairs – Sari-Jai Walker will address the students regarding advocacy and student rights.

9:40 – 10:00 – Career Development Center – Brad Robbins will share information about the ways they support students through resume building, interview skills, and job searching.

10:00 – 10:25 – Campus Safety – Chief Brenda Mitchell will share information about parking on campus, interacting with students, laws in Alabama, and more.

10:25 – 10:45 – Campus Technology – Tobias Mense will share information about Wi-Fi on campus, the Help Desk, email concerns, scams/fraud, and more.

10:45 – 11:00 – Housing on Campus – Iyisha Hampton from Housing and Residence Life will share information about the residence halls and items needed in your rooms.

11:00 – 11:10 – Dining on Campus – Amber Emery from AUM Dining will share information regarding the dining options that are available on campus.

11:10 – 11:20 – The Wellness Center – Jennifer Puryear from the Wellness Center will share details on what types of classes and equipment are available as well as the hours.

11:20 – 11:30 – The AUM Bookstore – Ben Lee from the AUM Bookstore will share details on the Bookstore hours as well as what types of items are for sale.

11:30 – 12:00 Professor Panel on Zoom Taylor Center 230
This is an opportunity for you to hear from professors as well as ask questions about your studies.

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch Taylor Center 230
BurgerFi Box lunch is provided for each student to take away.

1:15 – 2:30 English Placement Test Taylor Center Computer Lab 117
Each student will receive a link to take the test online at home or we can request a computer lab on campus. The link will be sent to their AUM email account. They have an hour and a half from clicking on the link for the test until the test ends. It can only be sent to an AUM email account once, so they must have their S# and birthday entered, and read all instructions for the test.

2:30 – 4:30 Transit Tour and Shopping Trip (Optional) Outside of Taylor Center
