International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation is designed to assist you with the transition to the United States. You will learn about academics in the United States, hear from professors, meet fellow students, and take a tour of the campus and Montgomery, Alabama. Breakfast and lunch is provided each day. It is imperative to bring your passport, Form I—20, and immunization/vaccine form to orientation.

Orientation days are planned to provide you with the necessary information to get around campus comfortably and find where to go. Not only will you get to know others who are attending AUM, but also meet the administration and staff of AUM. Orientation day is your day to become a Warhawk.

Get ready to jump-start your college experience – Join the Warhawk Nation!

At orientation, you will:

  • Register for classes
  • Get your Warhawk ID
  • Tour your campus
  • Meet future friends and classmates
  • Learn about student services
  • Get your questions answered
  • Learn about life in the U.S.A.
  • Learn about academics in the U.S.A.

Orientation is required for all new AUM students.

International Orientation Schedule

Day 1 – Wednesday, May 25th, 2022

8:00 – 10 A.M. | Check-in | Taylor Center 230

Check-In Stations – Immigration Check-In Appointment, Student ID, TB Skin Test, and Breakfast. Appointments start on Tuesday, May 31st for the Immigration Check-In.


10 – 10:10 A.M. | Welcome Address to AUM |  Taylor Center 221-223

  • 10:00 – 10:10 A.M. Dr. Mrinal Mugdh Varma will address the new international students/welcome them to AUM.

10:20 – 11:05 A.M.  |Student Health Services and Student Rights |  Taylor Center 221-223

  • 10:20 – 10:35 A.M. – Student Affairs – Jason Baggett will address the students regarding advocacy and student rights.
  • 10:35 – 10:50 A.M. Warhawk Health Services – Lindsey Barton will speak on the services that the Health Center on campus provides to students.
  • 10:50 – 11:05 A.M. Counseling & Health Promotion Services Catie Straube will speak on the services that the Counseling Center provides to students as well as the hours and how to make appointments.

11:05 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. | International Student Requirements and Safety | Taylor Center 221-223

  • 11:05 – 11:20 A.M. Insurance Enrollment – Laurie Bellinger presents information on the United Healthcare Insurance Plan for international students. We will give tips on the enrollment process, how to login to your United account online, and the guidelines of the insurance.
  • 11:20 – 11:45 A.M. – Life in the USA Jason Crutchfield presents on Montgomery, AL, customs of the United States, and tips to assist with the transition to American culture.
  • 11:45 A.M. – 12:10 P.M. – Immigration Requirements Ayush Taneja presents requirements for your Student Visa status while at AUM. Details include: F-1 status, working on or off campus, the number of classes you must take and more.
  • 12:10 – 12:30 P.M. – Campus Safety – Chief Brenda Mitchell will share information about parking on campus, interacting with students, laws in Alabama, and more.

12:30 – 1:30 | Lunch | AUM Café

Saffron is available in the AUM Café. 


1:30 – 3:30 P.M. | TB Skin Test, Student ID, and Immigration Check-In Appointments | Taylor Center 230

If you did not finish one of these items from this morning, we will have the stations setup in TC 230 to complete your TB Skin Test, Immigration Appointment, or Student ID.


2:30 – 4:30 P.M. | Transit Tour and Shopping Trip (Optional) | Outside of Taylor Center

Shopping to purchase items needed for your daily life/ tour the surrounding area of AUM.


2:30 – 4:30 | English Placement Test (Undergraduate Students) | Taylor Center Computer Lab 117

Each student will receive a link to take the test online at home or we can request a computer lab on campus. The link will be sent to their AUM email account. They have an hour and a half from clicking on the link for the test until the test ends.


2:30 – 4:30 | CSCIS Assessment Testing (Graduate Students)  | Goodwyn Hall, Room 307

45 students will test for the CSCI 5003 C++ Assessment Testing.


Day 2 – Thursday, May 26th, 2022

9:30 – 10:10 A.M. | Warhawk Campus Resource Sessions | Taylor Center 221-223

9:30 – 9:40 A.M. –The Wellness Center – Jennifer Puryear from the Wellness Center will share details on what types of classes and equipment are available as well as the hours.

9:40 – 10 A.M. AUM Dining and Bookstore – Ben Lee from AUM Dining and the AUM Bookstore will share information regarding the dining options that are available on campus and the Bookstore hours as well as what types of items are for sale.

10 – 10:10 A.M. – Housing on Campus – Iyisha Hampton from Housing and Residence Life will share information about the residence halls and items needed in your rooms.


10:10 – 10:20 A.M. | Break | Taylor Center 221-223


10:20 – 10:45 A.M. | Professor Panel on Zoom  | Taylor Center 221-223

This is an opportunity for you to hear from professors as well as ask questions about your studies. 


10:45 A.M. – 12:05 P.M. | Warhawk Campus Information Sessions| Taylor Center 221-223

10:45 – 11:20 A.M. Academics in the U.S.A. –Dr. Paul Fox will address the importance of the core curriculum at AUM, learning expectations, and academic dishonesty.

11:20 – 11:40 A.M. – Career Development Center – Mabs Seay will share information about the ways the Career Development Center supports students through resume building, interview skills, and job searching.

11:40 A.M. – 12:05 P.M. – Campus Technology – Tobias Mense will share information about Wi-Fi on campus, the Help Desk, email concerns, scams/fraud, and more.


12:05 – 1:05 P.M. | Lunch |Taylor Center 221-223

BurgerFi meals will be handed out for each student to take away or eat in the room


1:15 – 3:45 P.M. | Math Placement Test (Undergraduate Students) | Math Lab – Taylor Center 310

Requirement for registering for classes. Need student ID and student number to take the test.
