Meet Caroline Phelps

I’ve always been drawn to the parts of science that happen behind the scenes — the lab work most people never see, but that quietly makes all the difference. That pull toward hands-on discovery led me to Auburn University at Montgomery’s Medical Laboratory Science program.

What made AUM the right fit was the size of the campus and the sense of community that came with it. Being on a smaller campus meant I could actually get to know my professors, get involved, build real friendships, and feel like I belonged from the very beginning.

One person who has shaped my experience more than most is Dr. Aggarwal. She creates a classroom environment where asking questions never feels intimidating, and where you know she genuinely wants you to understand, not just keep up. Her patience has made a lasting impression on me.

I found my footing at AUM the moment I started saying yes to opportunities on campus, especially through Zeta Tau Alpha. Getting involved gave me a sense of purpose I hadn’t expected, and it wasn’t long before I stepped into leadership as Chapter President — learning to guide my peers and build something bigger than myself. It’s one of the accomplishments I’m proudest of.

Balancing that role with a science-heavy course load hasn’t always been easy. But AUM has met me at every turn — with faculty who encourage rather than intimidate, resources that are accessible, and a campus culture that makes it feel normal to ask for help. That support has helped me grow into someone more confident and capable.

Outside of academics, I love throwing myself into new experiences—meeting new people, trying new things, saying yes to whatever comes next. That mindset has shaped my entire college journey.

Looking ahead, I’m working toward hands-on laboratory experience after graduation, with my sights set on a future in forensic science. AUM gave me the foundation, the community, and the confidence to believe that future is within reach.
