Students from Auburn University at Montgomery’s Department of Communication & Theatre have demonstrated a flair for storytelling in a variety of mediums.

In early February, two Communication students placed second in a podcasting competition at the Southeast Journalism Conference at Mississippi State University. Nicholas Cutrell and Shaniece McGhee focused their podcast on the HBO documentary “Ren Faire” and the Season 1 episode, “Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Go the Will?”

Their creativity helped them earn honors alongside students from Belmont University and the University of Mississippi. Cutrell will graduate in December, while McGhee is in just her second semester in the Communication program.

Other AUM students who competed in the competition were junior Mya Law (opinion writing), freshman Jonathan Gardner (current events), and junior Nicholas Drayton (radio news and TV anchoring). Cutrell also competed in feature photography.

Student journalists represented nearly 20 Southeastern universities (including several SEC schools) from eight states. The Southeast Journalism Conference offers professional development opportunities and a vibrant learning community for collegiate journalists in a variety of media disciplines. SEJC was created to encourage greater interest in student journalism and to form closer ties among journalism schools in the Southeast United States.
