Warhawk Spotlight: UNIV students, faculty and staff gain ‘different perspective on diversity for leadership’

by Caitlin Forrest | Apr 11, 2016

Diversity and Inclusiveness: Students in Amy Ingram’s UNIV 1000 class, as well as AUM students, faculty and staff, attended a presentation April 6 by Dr. Herbert Riedel, president of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, on “A Different Perspective on Diversity for Leadership.”

Riedel shared insights on leadership valuable to anyone who hopes to succeed in a global and diverse society. Remaining open-minded and treating others with respect, regardless of whether or not we share the same beliefs, are a few of the approaches Riedel suggested to help ensure successful relationships in the workplace and our personal lives.

“Not all diversity is plainly visible,” said Riedel, explaining how his experiences growing up the son of German immigrants and living in and attending school in different parts of the world helped shaped his view of diversity.

After a brief Q&A session, a reception provided an opportunity for more one-on-one conversations with the speaker and discussions of diversity and its importance at AUM and in the local and global communities.

The event was sponsored by The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and Student Success and Retention.
