Mense named chief information officer of Auburn University at Montgomery

by Neil Probst | Apr 05, 2016

Tobias Mense, senior technology officer for Advanced Technologies, a unit of SummaSource at Auburn University at Montgomery, and an alumnus of the university, has been named AUM’s chief information officer. He will oversee the university’s newly formed Office of Technology, which includes AUM’s Information Technology Services (ITS) and Advanced Technologies. Mense will serve as a member of the university’s senior staff and report directly to the AUM chancellor.

“This reorganization positions Auburn University at Montgomery to create efficiencies on campus and for our external clients and partners. It also increases the opportunity to better support the new technology initiatives currently taking shape in the Montgomery community,” said AUM Chancellor John G. Veres III. “Tobias’ leadership in his previous role has well prepared him to lead the university’s interactions with programs like the River Region Cyber Initiative.”

Under Mense’s direction, AUM ITS and Advanced Technologies will continue operating in their present capacities. Mense will also focus efforts to grow AUM’s relationships and collaborations with the newly created Air Force Cyber College, and the planned Montgomery Internet Exchange. Having one point of contact overseeing all technology programs will allow AUM to better leverage its IT knowledge to serve the campus, the community and outside clients.

To his new position, Mense brings more than 10 years of experience in technology management and operations. After beginning his AUM career as an IT technician in the university’s library in 2007, Mense served as senior IT consultant and then lead senior IT consultant in Advanced Technologies/AUM Outreach. Before coming to AUM, Mense worked as a management assistant in IT–Systems at Deutsche Telekom AG in Münster, Germany.

Mense earned his B.S. in Information Systems and his M.B.A. from AUM.

With his IT experience and background serving AUM, Mense looks forward to his new role.

“I am honored to have this new opportunity to serve this great university, my alma mater, and the River Region,” Mense said. “Working in multiple capacities for AUM’s Advanced Technologies unit acquainted me with the operations of state and private organizations, and I hope to employ this knowledge to enhance the learning and work experiences for students, faculty and staff and to better position AUM and the River Region as a leading technology hub. Additionally, I hope to integrate the global IT viewpoint that I gained in my experience in Germany into AUM’s IT operations on campus and as a partner to businesses and other organizations in the state.”
