Air War College officers to share leadership experiences at Auburn University at Montgomery

Air Force, Marine, Army officers to discuss changing face of the military.

Auburn University at Montgomery/Montgomery, Ala. (April 25, 2016) — Four veteran military officers studying at Maxwell Air Force Base’s Air War College will share their experiences and perceptions of the changing face of leadership in the military during a public forum April 26 at Auburn University at Montgomery. The officers will talk about why they chose military careers as well as share observations on developments that have improved life for military families and have seen women integrated into combat roles. The presentations are part of AUM’s annual Hap Arnold Lecture Program.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Adam Stone is an intelligence officer who was commissioned in 1995 from the U.S. Air Force Academy and most recently served as executive officer to the commander, 25th Air Force. He will speak about leading in a more volatile world environment and on changes in how the military cares for families. Several of Stone’s subordinates were attending a movie at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater when a mass shooting took place, and his leadership involved helping counsel and care for his team following the violence.

Royal Australian Air Force Wing Commander Pete Thompson, a DHC-4 Caribou and C-17A Globemaster pilot who is currently executive officer of an Australian Air Force flying wing, will speak about differences in the U.S. and Australian Air Forces, how changing technology impacts leadership, and on decision-making within the chain of command.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Beth Behn, a logistics officer who most recently served as chief of sustainment for the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., received her commission from the United States Military Academy in 1994 and has served in Haiti and Iraq. She will speak about leadership empowerment, her experiences leading overseas, and how the Army is a meritocracy.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Denise Mull, who was commissioned in 1993 following graduation from the University of Arizona and commanded a combat logistics battalion in Afghanistan, will speak about the integration of women into the combat leadership environment as well as issues the military is facing with sexual assault, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse, as well as coping with casualties.
