FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUM Advances to year three of NCAA Division II membership process

Auburn University at Montgomery/Montgomery, Ala. (Jul. 13, 2018) – Auburn University at Montgomery moved another step closer to full NCAA status on Friday when the Warhawks were approved to advance to the third and final year of the membership process by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee.

“Auburn University at Montgomery is pleased with today’s news from the NCAA,” said AUM Chancellor Dr. Carl A. Stockton. “The AUM Warhawks look forward to moving into our third year of NCAA DII candidacy and continuing our progress toward acceptance in the Gulf South Conference. I thank our Athletics staff for their focus on this process, and I thank our student-athletes and our faculty and staff who have contributed to our progress.”

This past year saw the Warhawks join the GSC as a provisional member, with each team playing a full conference schedule. The Warhawks were not eligible for postseason play in its first year in the conference but 106 AUM student-athletes were named to the GSC Fall, Winter and Spring Academic Honor Rolls.

If all benchmarks are completed during this next year, AUM will have completed the process of Division II membership and will be eligible for NCAA and GSC postseason play during the 2019-20 academic year.

“We took another step in the right direction today,” said AUM Director of Athletics Jessie Rosa. “Doing just that is what this entire process has been about and what will ultimately elevate the AUM experience for all of our students.  The willingness of other units on campus to partner with us in ensuring we have adequate processes in place was instrumental in our approval to Year 3.  They, along with our student-athletes, coaches and staff members are the reason why we are able to celebrate today.”

The committee also voted to advance three other schools that are working through the multiyear membership process. Biola University, Davenport University and Purdue University Northwest all were approved to begin the third year of the membership process in 2018-19. Benedictine University (Illinois), Savannah State University and The University of Texas at Tyler were accepted into the Division II membership process and will begin the first year of the process.
