AUM earns top honors in Reader’s Choice Awards

Residents of Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties voted Auburn University at Montgomery as the top university in the River Region in the 2019 Montgomery Advertiser Readers’ Choice Awards

“We are honored to be selected by readers of the Montgomery Advertiser as the No. 1 university in the River Region for the second consecutive year,” Auburn University at Montgomery Chancellor Carl A. Stockton said. “We are proud to serve the residents of Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties. Students from these communities have represented the lifeblood of our institution since we welcomed our first class in September of 1969. As we approach our 50th anniversary of serving students, we remain committed to helping graduates of our local high schools and community colleges realize their educational and professional goals.”

Raised by the Power of 10 Men

Raised by the Power of 10 Men is an initiative that was started by the Montgomery Public School System, Office of Family and Community Engagement four years ago. The power of 10 equates to the number 10 multiplied by itself to create a perfect number. It signifies the power of shared responsibility between the men in our city and the students within the school system aims in the promotion of elevating the youth and the city we reside in.

It was developed as a reflection of events that were implemented by other schools around the U.S, in response to the “first day of school initiative.” The Montgomery Public School System wants to provide a more welcoming and encouraging atmosphere to get more students excited about their first day of school. It is an effort to connect the schools with their community and to promote a positive front. It is also used to recognize the importance of fathers and or father figures and the roles they play in their child’s education. The goal is to have 100 men line the halls of each school with cheers, applause, and high fives as students enter, while encouraging them to set the tone by making their first day their best day ever!

This year MPS Community Schools has teamed up with the Leadership Montgomery Torchbearers Class XI to kick off the 2019-20 school year. The first day of school is Tuesday, August 6, 2019 and the event is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. The following schools will be participating:

Bellingrath Middle School | 3350 South Court Street, Montgomery, AL 36105
Davis Elementary School | 3605 Rosa Parks Ave, Montgomery, AL 36105
Goodwyn Middle School | 209 Perry Hill Road, Montgomery, AL 36109
Peter Crump Elementary School | 3510 Woodley Road, Montgomery, AL 36116
Southlawn Middle School | 5333 Mobile Highway, Montgomery, AL 36108
