J. Mills Thornton III, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Michigan. Thornton is a nationally recognized authority on politics and race in the American South. His books include Politics and Power in a Slave Society: Alabama, 1800-1860 (Louisiana State University Press, 1978) and Dividing Lines: Municipal Politics and the Struggle of Civil Rights in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma (University of Alabama Press, 2006). The title of his conference presentation is “Redemption and the Jews in Montgomery.”
