AUM Alert

As part of Auburn University at Montgomery’s ongoing effort to safeguard students, faculty and staff, the University has implemented a new emergency communications system. Known as the AUM Alert, the system allows you to receive time-sensitive emergency messages in the form of e-mail, voice mail and text messages.

Everyone who has a AUM e-mail address will receive emergency alerts on their computers. However, in order to receive text messages and voice mail alerts, members of the campus community will be asked to provide a mobile phone number. While participation in the text and voice messaging notification is optional, enrolling is strongly encouraged. The information that you supply is considered confidential and will not be shared. You will only be contacted through the system in the event of an emergency.

(Use your AUM email and email password to login).

Because students, faculty and staff are constantly on the move, this system provides the flexibility for you to receive emergency messages on multiple devices. AUM Alert will be used along with other tools including e-mail, AUM website, local media and other methods.

All students, faculty and staff who have a valid AUM ID are encouraged to sign up to receive text and voice mail alerts.

AUM Alert is intended as a service for AUM students, faculty, and staff only. However, students may add up to 6 numbers and email addresses of their choosing.

While nationwide numbers are accepted, the system will not accommodate international numbers.

AUM Alert is managed jointly through the Public Safety Office, the AUM Police Department, the Office of Information Technology Services.

This system will only be used to distribute information regarding emergencies that dictate immediate action.

Examples of alerts include severe weather, evacuations and other threatening situations or emergencies. The message will direct you where to go for further information or what action to take. Less urgent messages will be sent using the campus e-mail system. Following a warning, the alert system may be used to provide additional messages or an “all clear” announcement. AUM Alert will also be tested on a routine basis.

Sample Messages:

Weather Alert – Tornado Warning
EMERGENCY WEATHER ALERT. AUM is under a tornado warning. Seek shelter and tune to local media for additional information.

Armed Gunman
EMERGENCY ALERT. There is an armed gunman on campus. Seek immediate shelter inside a locked room until you receive an “All Clear”

Since AUM Alert is a hosted and managed system, you will not need special hardware or software to receive messages. It is a multi-modal service that can disseminate emergency messages through:

  • E-mail: An alert message will be sent to your official campus e-mail address(es).
  • Web: Information about existing emergency procedures, are posted at www.aum.edu. During an emergency, details and updated information will be provided on the AUM website.
  • Voice Message, SMS Text Messages: Faculty, staff, and students who choose to register their mobile phone numbers will receive voice and (optionally) SMS text messages.
  • Other systems: Other campus systems may be involved in broadcasting emergency information.

Yes. A confirmation message will be sent to your cell phone within 48 hours. After you sign up online, you should automatically receive a text message to your mobile phone to confirm your request. The confirmation message will read as follows: You are now confirmed to receive alerts from us. More info text reply “HELP” or “STOP” to opt-out.

The phone number that you will see in your caller ID will be 334-244-3000 You should program this number into your phone so it will immediately recognize it as an urgent call.

If you do not have a text messaging contract as part of your cellular service, there may be a small charge for any text messages that you receive. You should check with you cell phone carrier to determine what these costs may be.

The information collected for the AUM Alert will be maintained in a separate database used for this function only and will not be shared.
