Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey awarded a $100,000 Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs grant to AUM’s Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse & Training Institute to deliver a minimum of 27 free or low-cost trainings to state law enforcement agencies.
“Without proper training, agencies can open themselves to lawsuits and litigation, and in some cases ‘failure to train’ lawsuits,” said Linda M. Wright, director of AUM’s Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse & Training Institute.
The grant will allow hosting law enforcement agencies to select training topics based on the need of the agency and the region. Trainings will be focused on advanced continuing education for law enforcement agencies and other groups. Longer, five-day training classes will be held for instructor development, first-line supervision, and master criminal investigator. The classes will be conducted by law enforcement experts located within and outside Alabama.
Auburn University at Montgomery Chancellor Carl A. Stockton is among the 11 leaders invited by Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed to serve on his transition committee.
In announcing the Montgomery United Transition plan to guide the next four years of his administration, Reed introduced 11 local leaders who will help offer policy recommendations covering education, economic development, public safety, infrastructure and transportation, health and human services, and cultural arts and entertainment.
Chaired by retired Judge Vanzetta Penn McPherson and investment banker John Mazyck, the committee also includes Aronov Company CEO Jake Aronov, realtor and philanthropist Lori David Boone, Business Council of Alabama President and CEO Katie Boyd Britt, Jackson Hospital surgeon Brian Gary, Hodges Warehouse & Logistics CEO Lance Hunter, JDB Hospitality founder Ashley Jernigan, Beasley Allen Law Firm Managing Attorney Tom Methvin, Camp Sunshine Founder Laurie Jean Weil, Alabama State University SGA President David Whitlow and Boyd Stephens, who helped launch the I85 Cyber Corridor Initiative.
Auburn University at Montgomery’s men’s basketball team has been on a roll lately, winning two consecutive games over the Thanksgiving break. The Warhawks will travel to Birmingham to face Division I Samford University tonight at 6:30 in an exhibition game. If you can’t make the trip, you can still catch the action on ESPN3.

The AUM women’s team will visit Division I Troy University for an exhibition game Wednesday at 5 p.m., which will be available on ESPN+.
Distinguished Teaching Professor Mike Winkelman and eight students from Auburn University at Montgomery have been nominated for 2020 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) honors for their roles in Theatre AUM’s play adaptation of “The Seagull.”
Winkelman and students will be recognized at the 2020 Region IV KCACTF. The festival will be held at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina Feb. 4-8, 2020.
Theatre AUM held on-campus performances of the “The Seagull,” a play set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century, Nov. 7-17. The student production portrayed a cast of characters searching for meaning – some seek love, others success, but happiness is elusive, remaining just out of reach. [JPG ATTACHED]

Enjoy a free performance by the Auburn University at Montgomery Chorus and AUMcappella Wednesday night at 7 in Goodwyn Hall 109. The 30-minute performance will allow plenty of time for students, faculty and staff to enjoy the concert before attending Professors-n-Pajamas.

Considering this is the time of year where people give the most, the Department of Athletics wants to make sure that no one ends up on the NCAA’s naughty list for trying to do something nice. Here are a few friendly reminders.
Extra Benefits: According to NCAA rules, an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee, or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests, to provide a student-athlete, or a prospective student-athlete, or their friend or family member, a benefit not also available to the general student population, or a particular segment of the student body.
- Holiday presents/gifts
- Money, loans, bonds, or co-signing of loans
- Free transportation (use of a car, boat, airline tickets, bus tickets, etc.)
- Free storage
- Free merchandise (clothes, video games, etc.)
- Free entertainment (sporting events, movies, concerts, nightclubs, etc.)
- Free lodging (hotel rooms, staying at apartment/house, etc.)
- Free meals
- Discounted merchandise because of status
- Free use of a credit card, calling card, etc.
Holiday Gifts: It is impermissible to provide holiday gifts to student-athletes or their relatives. Please remember that holidays are not exempt from the NCAA’s extra-benefit bylaws.
Occasional Meals: Occasional meal rules apply to team holiday parties, as well as any AUM faculty and staff member or parents who wishes to provide a student-athlete, or an entire team, with a holiday meal. Be sure to complete an Occasional Meal Form, submit it to the Athletics Compliance Office and get approval before any such meal occurs.
EVENTS
The last day of classes for the semester is December 3. The study/weather make up day is Dec. 4. Final exams will be Dec. 5, 9–11.

Any student currently enrolled at AUM may submit his or her work as an attached file (.txt, .doc. or .docx) to [email protected]. Students should title their file using the following pattern: Last Name_Title of Story_Genre. Written work should be in Times New Roman, 12-point font and double-spaced. Files containing photographs or scanned artwork (.png, .jpeg. or .bmp) should be at least 300 PPI.
