AUM Athletics hosting voter registration drive

Are you registered to vote? If not, AUM Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee can help you change that.

They will jointly host a public voter registration drive on Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in Taylor Center room 230.

SAAC president and current volleyball player Skylar Coppinger is looking forward to.

“This is a great way to get people involved who may not have had the opportunity to register or haven’t understood the true importance of voting until now,” said SAAC president and current volleyball player Skylar Coppinger. “Every vote and every voice matters, so it’s important to get as many people registered as possible so they can bring their personal beliefs and opinions to the polls.”

Happy birthday, AUM!

Fifty-three years ago today, then-Alabama Gov. Lurleen B. Wallace brought Auburn University at Montgomery into conceptual existence by signing Legislative Act No. 403, authorizing $5 million in bonds to help lay the groundwork for the university.

AUM began serving students in the fall of 1969, but by most measures, this is our birthday.

We’d share some cake with you, but we’re trying to social distance.

Pictured with her at left is then-Auburn University President Harry Philpott and, at right, State Senator Otis J. “Joe” Goodwyn. You might know his name from Goodwyn Hall.

Sentinel Testing Program begins

Soon, members of the Auburn University at Montgomery campus community will be randomly selected for COVID-19 testing as part of the Sentinel Testing Program.

The program will provide weekly random testing for asymptomatic individuals to better understand and mitigate potential community transmission of COVID-19. Students and employees selected at random will begin receiving emails from Healthy@Verily.com asking them to schedule a testing appointment for testing. Some of you may have already received this email.

It is strongly encouraged for members of the AUM community to participate in Sentinel testing if they attend classes, live, work or engage in activites on campus. If you receive an email request to set up an appointment, log into your Verily account to complete a pre-test symptom screen and schedule your test.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 12 weeks, please do not retest at this time. If you are having symptoms or have a recent exposure, please refer to the “Health & Safety” section of AUM’s Back to Campus plan.

In addition to testing, AUM has enacted other measures to help safeguard students and employees during the pandemic:

  • Face masks. All members of the campus community are required to wear face masks indoors (with the exception of private residence hall rooms) and outdoors when social distancing is not possible. Make sure your mask securely covers your mouth and nose.
  • Social distancing. It’s important to maintain a buffer zone of at least 6-feet between yourself and other individuals.
  • Visitation policy. Housing & Residence Life currently prohibits visitors in campus housing spaces to help reduce the possibility of community transmission of COVID-19.
  • Avoiding large gatherings.
  • Hygiene. Wash your hands frequently, using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Self-screening. Students and employees should utilize the AUM Healthcheck tool to assess personal health before coming to campus.

Cast your vote for AUM

We’re proud of the impact we’re making in Alabama’s River Region.

If you’d like to help AUM receive recognition for its community-focused partnerships and programming, cast a vote in the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 MGM Impact Awards. AUM is one of the nominees in the “Large Business” category.

Voting ends on Friday. Cast your vote: https://www.montgomerychamber.com/mgm-impact-makers

Become a Working Warhawk

Are you looking for work on campus? AUM’s Career Development Center is ready to assist students with finding work on campus using Handshake, the university’s online tool for connecting students with off-campus employers and on-campus job opportunities.

To begin your search and access Handshake, complete the following steps:

  • Go to MyAUM and select the Handshake link. You will be taken directly to the Handshake login page.
  • Register for an account in Handshake. Simply select Auburn University at Montgomery, complete a brief informational section, and you’re all set!

Within the job search, you can search specifically for on-campus positions. To do this, select Jobs from the top menu bar and this should take you directly to the job search page.

30-Day Wellness Challenge

Are you up for a challenge? If so, the AUM Wellness Center wants to reward students who engage in a healthy lifestyle during its 30-Day Wellness Challenge.

The 30-Day Wellness Challenge is about creating healthy eating habits, getting enough sleep, ensuring that we move our bodies, and of course not forgetting to take time to breathe. The Wellness Center will give away weekly prizes based on the challenge’s theme of the week. One grand prize will be awarded at the end to the student who completes the most daily challenges in the month.

How to participate

Throughout September, follow the Wellness Center on Instagram @aum_wellnesscenter for weekly tips on how to eat, sleep, move, and breathe your way to wellness. Each day, the Wellness Center will share a different challenge activity for students to complete. Students must share a picture of them completing the activity and tag the AUM Wellness Center using the hashtags #eatsleepmovebreathe, #AUMWellness, and #AUM on Instagram.

Prize announcements will be included in the Wellness Center’s Instagram stories each Monday. Consideration for weekly prizes will be determined by the number of activities each student completes for a themed week (Monday through Sunday).

Check the Wellness Challenge Calendar for daily challenge activities.
