Education students complete pre-service math certification

Twenty Childhood Education students from the Auburn University at Montgomery College of Education have completed their AMSTI Pre-service Math certification at AUM.

AMSTI, the research-based Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative that incorporates best practices for math teaching, is the Alabama Department of Education’s initiative to improve math and science teaching statewide.

The training consisted of coursework offered in the Methods of Teaching Elementary Math class and three days additional study. Certified individuals now have access to mathematics manipulatives and support provided by the state Department of Education.

Participants included Hannah Alexander, Kaitlin Arp, Jenny Bailey, Janice Brooks, Macy Brown, Kristen Cunningham, Tiana Daniel, Elizabeth Dunham, Whitney Garrett, Leigh Anne Hendrick, Tanishya Jones, Brooklyn Knight, Katie Martin, Shanoda Moore, Phillip Perry, Andrea Rygiel, Brooke Scoggins, Ali Stewart, Shamel Williams and Brooke Williamson.

Faculty, staff: $20 off youth camps

Spots are filling up quickly for AUM OutReach’s summer educational enrichment activities. AUM faculty and staff receive $20 off all camps!

OutReach at AUM currently has almost 700 campers registered for its summer youth camps, beginning the week of June 5 until July 28. Some of the most popular camps are Vet Camp, Robotics, Cupcake Craze, Hogwarts Academy and American Girl Camp.

AUM Study Abroad accepting proposals for 2018

Faculty, do you want to turn your class into an unforgettable experience? Are you interested in creating and leading a Study Abroad course for spring or summer 2018?

Think about aligning your course with a study abroad component. AUM Study Abroad is now accepting faculty-led program proposals for 2018. Faculty can find the 2018 Faculty-Led, Short-Term Study Abroad Handbook on AUM’s Study Abroad website.

Klash helps judge ‘Amazing Shake’ competition

Dr. Erin Klash, instructor in the College of Education’s Curriculum, Instruction & Technology Department, recently served as a judge at Opelika Middle School’s “Amazing Shake” competition, a soft-skills competition that was created by Ron Clark.

Students were interviewed for 1–2 minutes each and judged on eye contact, hand shake, posture, and response to questions that were random or current-event based. “The kids did an amazing job, and it was a great event,” Klash said.

Evans editor of ‘Romeo and Juliet: Critical Insights’

Dr. Bob Evans, professor in the Department of English and Philosophy, is editor of a new book, Romeo and Juliet: Critical Insights, which includes essays by noted scholars Bruce Boehrer, Maurice Hunt, Frances Teague, Christopher Baker, James Hirsh, Matthew Steggle, Lisa Hopkins, and various others.

Sterling publishes essay in ‘Flash Fiction’

Dr. Eric Sterling, professor in the Department of English and Philosophy, has published an essay, “Living Together, Living Apart: Jews under Oppressive Russian Regimes in Isaac Babel’s Flash Fiction,” in Critical Insights: Flash Fiction, published by Salem Press.

Sterling’s refereed article concerns Isaac Babel’s fiction on anti-Semitism in Russia in the early parts of the 20th century and why Babel’s fiction led Stalin to order his execution.

Arts and Sciences invites public to Mini-College

Auburn University at Montgomery’s Mini-College, hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, allows adults interested in lifelong learning to spend two days on campus engaging with some of the university’s best teachers and leading scholars. Presentations and discussions will focus on topics across the arts and sciences spectrum, from history and literature to cosmology and psychology.

Clubs and Orgs – Get Visibility

Each semester the Office of Orientation and Transitions puts on the Weeks of Welcome — better known as WOW. During these weeks, clubs and organizations have the opportunity to host an event on campus from sponsoring a business breakfast to putting on an activity for all of our Warhawks.

Weeks of Welcome will last throughout the first few weeks of the new semester. If you are interested in having an event at Fall 2017 WOW, please fill out the online application. Fall 2017 WOW events are due by July 1, 2017.

Additionally, this summer, the Club and Organization Fair will be held during WOW events rather than during Orientation and Transition sessions. The Club and Organization Fair will have two dates:

  • August 22 | 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
  • August 30 | 5:30 p.m.–7 p.m.
