Powell elected SGA president
AUM students elected Jasmine Powell of Georgiana, Ala., as president of the AUM Student Government Association. Keirsten Mattox, SGA secretary, certified Powell’s win on March 29. Powell is a senior majoring in education and is actively involved on campus, serving on the SWOT Team and Peer Advocates.
Powell said her presidency will focus on ensuring that AUM students are informed about opportunities to be involved with clubs and organizations and to see their activities highlighted. She also plans to work to promote and grow campus traditions at AUM. Powell also declared her intent to create transparency for students with regard to faculty and administration initiatives and goals.
SPLC on Campus students visit detention center
Five students from the AUM SPLC on Campus Club visited the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia late last year.
The experience of several of the students, including Jasmine Boutdy, Donna Sanford, and Sam Duff, is available on the Southern Poverty Law Center news page.
THAT Literary Review published
The third issue of THAT Literary Review has been published and a full PDF is available online.
The Pushcart Prize-nominated journal is the work of faculty and students of Auburn University at Montgomery and Huntingdon College and is supported by the AUM College of Arts and Sciences.
AUM creative writing students Michelle Aitken, Evy Barrett, Matthew Johnson, Kim Leifer, LyAnne Peacock, Deric Sallas, Matthew Shoemaker have assisted the editorial staff, including faculty Joyce Kelley, Seth Reno, emeritus Barbara Wiedemann, and W. B. Gerard, in selecting, editing, and publishing material submitted from around the world. Print copies are available though the website
Faculty, staff encouraged to support admission events
Admissions would like to encourage faculty and staff to support and participate in several upcoming admission events.
College Road Trips allow prospective students from our community college partners to experience AUM on their own campus. Faculty and staff are encouraged to come and help inform students about their colleges and about the features and benefits of AUM. Please be on the lookout for these visitors and give them a warm Warhawk welcome!

OJS applications now open
Members of the Orange Jacket Society serve as the official ambassadors of AUM. OJS Members welcome and oversee AUM’s most prestigious events such as graduation, welcoming Chancellor’s guests to various events and working in the community with AUM Outreach.
Selection to the Orange Jacket Society is highly competitive. OJS applicants must be juniors, seniors, or graduate students, and they must have proven passion for AUM.
The application period to become a member of the OJS is open now. Interviews will take place April 5–7 and new members are inducted in May. If you would like to apply for the 2018-19 team, please fill out the available online application.

ECAR Technology Survey for students
The ECAR Technology Survey explores how students view and use technology. Participation in the survey will help AUM understand how to improve the support we provide out students. The anonymous survey will be open through Apr. 7. A survey link will be emailed to all undergraduate students on Mar. 26.
Campus Police to offer Student Active Shooter Training
This training from AUM Campus Police will prepare attendees for active shooter response by providing a range of options available using Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Each component is discussed in detail and demonstrations of techniques for lockdown, barricading and countering an attack are given.

RAD – Self Defense for Women
RAD is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The RAD system is a comprehensive, women-only course of instruction that begins with awareness, prevention, risk, and risk avoidance. It then progresses to teaching hands-on self-defense training, but it is not a martial arts program.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing.

Retirement reception for Dr. Scott Brown
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science would like to invite the campus to attend the retirement reception for Dr. Scott Brown.
Brown, Associate Professor of Mathematics, has served as a full-time faculty member in the department since 2003. Prior to that, he had served as a part-time faculty member since 1998.

Human Performance Lab Health, Fitness Assessments
The AUM Human Performance Lab (Wellness Center 115) offers health and fitness assessments on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
These assessments include a physician-reviewed 12-lead EKG stress test, resting and exercise blood pressure measures, blood chemistry profile, nutrition consultation, and tests of pulmonary function, body fat, flexibility, and muscular fitness.
The cost is $150 for the general public, $125 for AUM Faculty and Alumni, and $50 for current AUM students.

Turn a working lunch into a walking lunch
Join the AUM Health Promotion Committee for a 30-minute walk during lunch and take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle. It can be hard to find time in your busy schedule to participate in physical activity. However, taking a walk is one of the easiest and effective forms of exercise.
The National Walk @ Lunch Day is open to students, faculty, staff and the community. Registration is available through Alabama Blue. For more details about the walking lunch, please email Hillary Kervin Porter.

2018 Eisenhower National Security Series
Future Wars, Preparedness and Military Welfare will be at the forefront of the discussion panels during the 2018 Eisenhower National Security Series: College Program, which is presented by participants of the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pa.
The Eisenhower Series College Program is an academic outreach program established by the Department of the Army to encourage dialogue on national security and other public policy issues between personnel and students of the U. S. Army War College and the civilian public, with emphasis on students and faculty at academic institutions throughout the United States.

Montgomery County apprenticeships
The Montgomery County Commission is calling on all Montgomery County students, ages 16–22, to take part in the 2018 Student Apprenticeship Program.
The program lasts eight weeks, beginning Mon., Jun. 4 and ending Fri., Jul. 27. All eligible students are welcome to apply. The application and a letter of recommendation from a school guidance counselor or a Montgomery County Commissioner must be submitted by Fri., Apr. 20 at 5 p.m.

Internships are also offered, but requirements and eligibility are different from the apprenticeships. For more information on an internship, please contact the Montgomery City-County Personnel Office at 334-625-2675.
Auburn Author Awards
In recognition of faculty contributions to research and scholarship, the Graduate School is pleased to continue the Auburn Author Awards in 2018. The Auburn Author Awards Program of the Graduate School, jointly sponsored with Auburn University Libraries, recognizes graduate faculty and library staff members who have published a book-length scholarly work during the 2017 calendar year. Award recipients will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Draughon Library. Two books by Dr. Kalu N. Kalu, Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science & National Security Policy at Auburn University Montgomery, have been nominated for this honor.
The first book, Citizenship: Identity, Institutions, and the Postmodern Challenge, contrasts previous scholarship about citizenship as a construct. This groundbreaking book covers the full spectrum of literature on citizenship theory, including the state and structure of identity, the individual and the public, and the enduring issues of civic engagement and collective discourse.
The second book, Technology, Culture, and Public Policy: Critical Lessons from Finland, presents an energized and informative look at Finland’s cultural and developmental history, its political evolution as a state, the foundation and origins of its technology and innovation policy, and present developments in health care, education, and the pathway to sustainable economic development.
