Curtiss calendars on sale now
Your favorite Warhawk is preparing for the UCA Mascot National Championship at Disney World in January 2016, but Curtiss needs help. Celebrate 2016 with Curtiss as he gets into furry situations throughout AUM’s campus. All proceeds will go to the Curtiss the Warhawk Mascot Program to assist with scholarships, team travel to national championships, registration and props for competitions and mascot camp. The calendars are $10 and can be purchased in the Office of Orientation and Transitions, Taylor Center 308. They will be on sale throughout the remainder of the semester. Cash and checks made out to AUM Cheerleading will be accepted.

Pre-health professions students: Kaplan test prep books available
The Instructional Support Lab has all of the 2016 Kaplan pre-health professions test prep books available for students at AUM. These include Medical School (MCAT), Physician’s Assistant School (GRE), Physical Therapy School (GRE), Pharmacy School (PCAT), Dental School (DAT), and Optometry School (OAT).
Visit the ISL in Goodwyn Hall 203 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday to get the book you need.

Thursday conference may affect parking; shuttle will be available
A conference at AUM on Thursday, Oct. 29, may affect parking availability for AUM students and employees; however, a shuttle will be available if needed.
Should lots be full, students and employees also may park at the intramural field lot and take a shuttle to Taylor Center. The shuttle will run continuously from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. between the intramural field lot and Taylor Center.
AUM thanks students and employees for their patience and flexibility. As the roster of previously scheduled events winds down, future conference visitors will be directed to alternate parking in an effort to limit the impact on students, faculty and staff.
International conference on public policy to take place at AUM
The International Winter Chaos Conference, co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and the College of Public Policy and Justice, will take place Nov. 12–15.
At the gathering entitled “Public Policy, Self-organization and Public Space,” supported by a grant from the AUM Speaker’s Committee, scholars and workshops will focus on nonlinear dynamics and network analysis. The goal is to foster innovation in approaches to public policy.
The disciplines represented at the collaborative dialogue will include public policy, economics, psychology, environmental policy, neuropsychology, biology, chemistry, cross-cultural studies, engineering, physics, organizational development, the arts and music. Policy issues of interest this year include prison reform and environmental sustainability, among others.
Attendees will include scholars from Australia, France, Canada, Ireland, and various parts of the United States. Participants are welcome to attend the public addresses or participate in small group discussions. The “entry fee” for AUM faculty is your best idea about how to improve the human condition.
Since 1996, the conference has attracted interdisciplinary scholars in both the social sciences and sciences who meet to discuss emerging theories in their respective fields at different locations throughout the world.
Registration as soon as possible is encouraged, but attendees may register up to the date of the conference.

Braswell named president of SAIR
Dr. Cara Mia Braswell, assistant provost in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, recently was named president of the Southern Association for Institutional Research (SAIR). The association includes members from postsecondary institutions throughout 11 states who are involved in institutional research and effectiveness. Braswell began her elected term as president after serving as program chair of the regional conference in Savannah on October 10, at which over 100 concurrent sessions and 10 workshops were held for more than 450 attendees. SAIR is an affiliated organization with the Association for Institutional Research.
Evans publishes book; AUM MLA grad a contributor
Dr. Robert Evans is the author of a new book, Perspectives on Renaissance Poetry, published by Bloomsbury Academic Press. Each chapter covers a major figure in Early Modern poetry and explores two different poems from a full range of theoretical perspectives . The book includes a chapter by Christina Garner, a recent graduate of the AUM Master of Liberal Arts program.

Early Learning Center kids to trick-or-treat on Quad
AUM’s Early Learning Center children will march in the annual “Halloween Trick-or-Treat Parade” on Thursday. The children will be dressed in costumes that reflect their ancestral roots as they walk with their goodie bags around the Quad. The Early Learning Center faculty and staff invite everyone to hand out candy and cheer the children as they parade in their costumes.

Day of the Dead: Dia de los Muertos
Dr. Pamela Long, associate professor in the Department of History and WorldLanguages and Cultures, will present “Days of the Dead: Honoring Cultural Heroes of the Past” on Thursday in the Global Education Center. The Day of the Dead Altar, which will be present in the GEC during the presentation, honors AUM faculty, staff, students and cultural heroes who have passed away. Theatre AUM to present ‘Helvetica’
Opening Nov. 5, Theatre AUM will present an original work, Helvetica. Written by Will Coleman, Helvetica is a play about stories in which a children’s author, with the help of her beloved stuffed bear, must face the trials of life and death through fantasy and adventure.
Admission to regular performances is free (with AUM ID) for AUM students, faculty and staff. General admission is $10; admission for students from other schools, senior citizens, and military is $5.
The playwright will be on hand for a post-show discussion following the Nov. 14 show.

Thanksgiving around the world
Join the offices of Housing and Residence Life, International Student Involvement, and Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to experience global rituals of “thanks-giving,” feel a human bond that unites all cultures, celebrate “community” with the AUM family, and taste traditional American holiday and global cuisine. Sample delicious food from other countries and mingle with students from far and near.
Everyone is encouraged to bring at least one non-perishable food item to be donated to Montgomery’s Medical AIDS Outreach.

Gallery 213, AUM’s downtown studio, presents Kirana’s ‘Cycle’
Gallery 213, Auburn University at Montgomery’s downtown Montgomery art studio, will present Chintia Kirana’s “Cycle” from Oct. 19 through Dec. 4. The opening reception will be Friday, Nov. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Chintia Kirana holds a bachelor’s degree, with honors in painting and drawing, from AUM, and her master’s in fine arts from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. An active professional artist, Kirana exhibits widely and currently teaches studio art courses at AUM. Her light box artworks examine universal themes of life and death through circular imagery that evokes the interior of the human body.

Health and fitness appraisals available throughout fall semester
The Kinesiology Department’s Human Performance Lab is offering health and fitness appraisals through Warhawk Fit. Those interested can make an appointment with the Kinesiology Department throughout the fall semester. The package costs $125, and, during fall semester, the student cost is reduced to $75.

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) is accepting applications from faculty interested in receiving funds to help defray the cost of attending the Teaching Professor Conference in Washington, D.C., next June. Please see the CELT website for the fillable PDF form.

Kelley to speak on concert pianist’s travel narrative of world tours

Students: Jack and Ruth Lee Scholarship applications available
Applications for The Jack and Ruth Lee Scholarship, which provides $500 to be put toward books and supplies for the spring 2016 term, are now available in the Scholarships Office (in Admissions, first floor of Taylor Center) and The Center for Disability Services (Taylor Center 147). Anthony Pattin
Dr. Anthony Pattin holds degrees in piano performance from Toledo University, University of Michigan, and the University of Alabama. Pattin lives in Birmingham, Ala., and is active as a pianist in solo, orchestral, and chamber music performances.

SGA collecting books for literacy initiative
AUM’s Student Government Association will be collecting books of all kinds (children’s books to old textbooks) through Nov. 6 for the Book Drive for Literacy initiative started by the Alabama University Student Presidents Council (USPC) for the 2015-2016 academic school year. Speech and Hearing Clinic to offer free screenings for awareness month
To recognize National Hearing Conservation Awareness Month, the AUM Speech and Hearing Clinic will provide free hearing screenings for all students, faculty and staff. All those who are screened will be entered for a chance to win gift cards and other prizes.

UNIV Legacy project to aid children
The UNIV Legacy Committee is selling Warhawk Wings for $1 to help children through the Salvation Army. The Wings may be purchased from the Warhawk Academic Success Center (Library Tower, 2nd floor). Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), which explains rights to review education records, seek to amend inaccurate and misleading information, and also to ask the University not to disclose directory information.
