AUM rises in U.S. News & World Report rankings

For the third consecutive year, Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) earned recognition from U.S. News & World Report in its annual assessment of the nation’s top educational institutions and undergraduate programs.

In the 2020 Best Colleges survey released Monday, AUM was:

  • 13th among regional universities in the South for campus diversity
  • 33rd among regional public universities in the South for overall quality
  • 73rd for “social mobility,” which describes the effectiveness of universities in enrolling and graduating “economically disadvantaged students”
  • 79th among all regional universities in the South for overall quality
  • 88th nationally in the category of “First-Year Experiences,” which evaluates seminars and similar programs that regularly bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff

“We are proud to be ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s top universities in the region for the third consecutive year,” Auburn University at Montgomery Chancellor Carl A. Stockton said. “This recognition underscores the commitment our faculty and staff display on a daily basis in putting the needs of our students first and delivering a high-quality educational experience. I am especially pleased to see AUM jump 16 spots in the rankings due to our increase in graduation and retention rates.”

AUM’s graduation rate improved by 6 percent over 2019, while its freshman retention rate also rose. Among the factors in Auburn University at Montgomery’s rankings improvement were small class sizes, with nearly half of all courses having 20 or fewer students, and a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

Actor Evan Parke speaking tonight on campus

Actor, entertainer, and businessman Evan Parke, whose film and TV credits include “King Kong,” “Blue Bloods,” “Alias,” “The Blacklist,” “NCIS New Orleans” and “Django Unchained,” will speak tonight at 7 p.m. in Education Building room 112.

Parke will be the special guest at The Warhawk Bible Forum, a student organization dedicated to providing students with opportunities to build community, study, question items of religion and faith and connect with faculty members to discuss concerns and have questions answered about college life. The event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

The Warhawk Bible Forum meets each Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Education 112. Questions about “The Forum?” Email [email protected].

Get ‘BUZZed’ with your best girlfriend (or ally)

AUM students, faculty and staff can get $15 tickets for the world premiere of BUZZ at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. BUZZ is a funny and heartbreaking story of a woman’s struggle for agency in a man’s world. This new play by Susan Ferrara follows the all-too-short career of Buzz Goodbody, who, as the first woman director at London’s Royal Shakespeare Festival, revolutionized theatre with her innovative production of Hamlet (which catapulted a then little-known Ben Kingsley to fame).

Director Kerry Preston, an ASF alumna best known for her roles on True Blood, The Good Fight, and now CLAWS, takes audiences where they’ve never been before — literally. This original production is intimately staged in the ASF scene shop.

Like its namesake, this show is brilliant and will be gone before you know it. Grab your best girlfriend (or ally) and get your $15 ticket to BUZZ today with code STUDENTRUSH.

STUDENTRUSH pricing is also available to AUM students, faculty and staff for ASF’s productions of Hamlet and Saint Joan.

The world premiere of BUZZ | Alabama Shakespeare Festival | Sept. 10–15 | 7–8:30 p.m. | Discount code STUDENTRUSH

University offers active shooter training

The AUM Police Department will offer an active shooter training session on Fri., Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Taylor Center 222. The session is open to all students, faculty and staff and will provide training on actions that can be taken if individuals find themselves in a dangerous or threatening situation, as well as training on making split-second decisions that can save lives and prevent injury.

Help recognize top faculty and staff

Know of an Auburn University at Montgomery faculty or staff member who goes above and beyond in serving our students or in building community engagement? Help us recognize them by nominating them for the 2019-2020 Warhawk Spirit Awards.

The awards honor members of the Warhawk family who exemplify the university’s core values. Please send your nominations to [email protected] by the close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Your nomination should include the nominee’s name, title and department, and should describe how the nominee exemplifies the Warhawk Spirit.
