Meads elected Student At-Large member
A group of Auburn University at Montgomery honors students traveled to Washington, D.C., April 4–8 for the annual meeting of the Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC). SRHC is the professional society linking honors programs and colleges from across our ten-state region.
More than 600 students, faculty and staff were in attendance. At the meeting, sophomore history major Elizabeth Meads was elected to a one-year term as a Student At-Large member of the SRHC Executive Committee. As a member of the Executive Committee, Meads is charged with providing a student perspective on SRHC business. She will represent Auburn University at Montgomery and the SRHC at the National Collegiate Honors Council meeting in Boston this November and will assist with planning the 2019 SRHC meeting to be held next spring.
Filibuster seeking editor and designer
The Filibuster, AUM’s student-run literary and arts magazine, is looking for a new editor-in-chief and graphic designer for its 2019 issue. The positions begin in the Fall 2018 semester and will continue into the Spring 2019 term.
Experience with Adobe InDesign is required for the graphic design position. Experience with InDesign is also preferred for the Editor position but not required. All candidates must be enrolled as either a full- or part-time student during the year to serve in the position. He or she must maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Applicants should also have completed ENGL1010 and ENGL1020.
To apply, potential candidates will need to submit both a one-page letter of intent that describes their vision for the magazine and a one-page resume that describes their qualifications for serving in the position.
Candidates can send their letter of intent and resume as attached Microsoft Word documents to the Filibuster’s academic advisor, Dr. Robert Klevay.
Deadline to apply: May 31, 2018.
Continue Participating in Family Campaign
The co-chairs of the 2018 AUM Family Campaign, Megan Hughes and Tim Lutz, want to encourage participation and thank those that have already participated!
Contributions to the AUM Family Campaign are a vital demonstration of your support for AUM as well as any part of the university that is especially important to you. The contribution can go to the General Fund or you can earmark the money for a certain department, such as the Employee Assistance Fund – which helps AUM employees in times of need and emergencies, such as hospitalization, a death in the family, a house fire, etc. – the library, the theatre, student scholarships, the Honors Program, etc.
You may also designate a gift in memory of a departed friend or loved one as well as designate a contribution in honor of a special friend or colleague, such as a retiring colleague.
Please give what you can. All contributions – large and small – are welcome and appreciated. Keep in mind, contributions to the AUM Family Campaign are also tax deductible.

Faculty, staff encouraged to support admission events
Admissions would like to encourage faculty and staff to support and participate in several upcoming admission events.
College Road Trips allow prospective students from our community college partners to experience AUM on their own campus. Faculty and staff are encouraged to come and help inform students about their colleges and about the features and benefits of AUM. All faculty and staff (as well as current students) can play a valuable role simply by providing a warm Warhawk welcome to any and all visitors to campus.

With the Kick off to College Tailgate, AUM celebrates newly accepted summer and fall students. Students and families are invited to join in games, eat barbeque, meet faculty and staff, and future classmates. Students can register for orientation and sign up for housing during the event as well. Faculty and staff are encouraged to come show support to new students and provide them with guidance through their college transition.

Theatre AUM presents Measure for Measure
“Vienna is beset with brothels and loose morality and it’s up to the Duke to provide some divine intervention.” Measure for Measure is considered one of Shakespeare’s problem plays due to its shift in mood. Is it a comedy or is it a tragedy? Come see and decide for yourself.
AUM students, faculty and staff are free with AUM ID. Senior citizen, student, and military tickets are $5. General admission is $10.

RAD — Self Defense for Women
RAD is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The RAD system is a comprehensive, women-only course of instruction that begins with awareness, prevention, risk, and risk avoidance. It then progresses to teaching hands-on self-defense training, but it is not a martial arts program.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing.

Career Roadshow
The Career Development Center’s Career Roadshow makes its final stop for the spring semester.

Auburn Author Awards
In recognition of faculty contributions to research and scholarship, the Graduate School is pleased to continue the Auburn Author Awards in 2018. The Auburn Author Awards Program of the Graduate School, jointly sponsored with Auburn University Libraries, recognizes graduate faculty and library staff members who have published a book-length scholarly work during the 2017 calendar year. Award recipients will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Draughon Library. Two books by Dr. Kalu N. Kalu, Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science & National Security Policy at Auburn University Montgomery, have been nominated for this honor.
The first book — Citizenship: Identity, Institutions, and the Postmodern Challenge — contrasts previous scholarship about citizenship as a construct. This groundbreaking book covers the full spectrum of literature on citizenship theory, including the state and structure of identity, the individual and the public, and the enduring issues of civic engagement and collective discourse.
The second book — Technology, Culture, and Public Policy: Critical Lessons from Finland — presents an energized and informative look at Finland’s cultural and developmental history, its political evolution as a state, the foundation and origins of its technology and innovation policy, and present developments in health care, education, and the pathway to sustainable economic development.

Pizza & Paint is a guided painting experience. Sensory experiences, like painting, have been used as a therapeutic experience for those coping with stress and anxiety.
Pizza and drinks will be provided during the event while following along with an instructional painting video.

Southern Regional Algebra Conference
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is hosting a regional research conference: Southern Regional Algebra Conference. This conference is an important indication that AUM and the math faculty have a strong reputation in the region. The conference has scheduled 35 speakers, who are researchers/professors in the southeastern regions and a few internationals.

Political Film Series features An Inconvenient Sequel
The Political Film Series is back for another semester of exciting, educational films and intelligent discussion!
“An Inconvenient Sequel” is the award-winning sequel to “An Inconvenient Truth,” which raised awareness on climate change. This film will show how close we are to an energy revolution. Following former Vice-President Al Gore, the documentary shows efforts to invest in renewable energy leading up to the Paris Climate Agreement. But, with President Trump withdrawing from the agreement, what does this mean for the environment?
With an introduction from Dr. Rosine Hall, questions will be addressed following the screening.
The Political Film Series is sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and is made possible thanks to a grant from the Ida Belle Young Special Projects Fund. Human Performance Lab Health, Fitness Assessments
The AUM Human Performance Lab (Wellness Center 115) offers health and fitness assessments on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
These assessments include a physician-reviewed 12-lead EKG stress test, resting and exercise blood pressure measures, blood chemistry profile, nutrition consultation, and tests of pulmonary function, body fat, flexibility, and muscular fitness.
The cost is $150 for the general public, $125 for AUM Faculty and Alumni, and $50 for current AUM students.

Montgomery County apprenticeships
The Montgomery County Commission is calling on all Montgomery County students, ages 16–22, to take part in the 2018 Student Apprenticeship Program.
The program lasts eight weeks, beginning Mon., Jun. 4 and ending Fri., Jul. 27. All eligible students are welcome to apply. The application and a letter of recommendation from a school guidance counselor or a Montgomery County Commissioner must be submitted by Fri., Apr. 20 at 5 p.m.

Internships are also offered, but requirements and eligibility are different from the apprenticeships. For more information on an internship, please contact the Montgomery City-County Personnel Office at 334-625-2675.
