Warhawk Weekly 12–17: University supports 12 Day of Giving; Thornton inspires graduates; Help support United Way

NEWS

Auburn University at Montgomery recently participated in WSFA-TV 12’s Day of Giving initiative, which collects items for families in need during the holiday season.

AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton and students from the Orange Jacket Society dropped off a load of toys that will be distributed to children in the River Region. We encourage our students, faculty, staff and alumni to give back to their community this holiday season through donations of time, talent and treasure.

Get off the sidelines.

Among the many takeaways from Thornton Enterprises founder and President Larry Thornton during Saturday’s commencement sessions was the directive for graduates to utilize their skills and knowledge with confidence.

Thornton, the first African-American to own a McDonald’s franchise in Birmingham and the first to serve on the board of Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, spoke to more than 400 graduates during two sessions at the AUM Athletics Complex. A board member of Synovus and winner of 2019 CEO of the Year honors from the Birmingham Business-Journal, Thornton has chronicled his journey from the Jim Crow South to corporate boardrooms in the book, “Why Not Win?” He has shared his tips for success on 16 different college campuses since starting the Why Not Win? Foundation.

Faculty and staff still have time to join Auburn University at Montgomery’s efforts to support children, at-risk youth and older adults in our community through River Region United Way. Those who submit a completed pledge form or online donation confirmation for a gift of at least $25 by Friday at 4 p.m. will be entered into a pair of $50 cash drawings.

Complete an online pledge form at http://www.riverregionunitedway.org/donate or complete the donation form distributed through campus mail. To enter the drawing, share your completed form or online pledge with Paige Haines by Friday at 4 p.m.
