The Higher Education Opportunity Act
The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) requires institutions offering distance education courses or programs have processes in place to ensure that the student registering for a course is the same student who participants in the course or receives course credit. The HEOA requires institutions to verify the identity of a student who participates in class or coursework by using methods such as:

  • A secure login and pass code
  • Proctored examinations
  • New or other technologies and practices effective in verifying student identity

Additionally, the HEOA requires Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) to use processes that protect student privacy and notify students of any projected additional student charges associated with the verification of student identity at the time of registration or enrollment.

AUM User Name:  Secure Login and Pass Code
Auburn University Montgomery meets these requirements by assigning each student an AUM User Name; a secure login and password to access the University Learning Management System and the university network. All students registering for a course through our administrative system are assigned unique identification numbers, which correspond with a specific username for each student. These usernames or accounts use Active Directory (AD) and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to authenticate the user. Each student establishes and manages their password through My AUM, online at http://my.aum.edu. The university Password Policy requires that all users change their passwords every 180 days.

AUM Privacy Policy and Fee Notification
Students are notified of any associated course fees at the time of registration. There are not additional costs associated with authentication of student identity at AUM; however, there may be fees associated with the use of a proctoring service or approved proctor for examinations.  For example, ProctorU provides this service at a cost of $25 per exam for a 120-minute exam.

AUM Distance Learning Privacy Procedures and FERPA
Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) complies with all requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). AUM is committed to protecting the privacy of all students’ educational records, regardless of course delivery method. For more information, refer to the AUM Distance Learning Privacy Procedures.

Filing Complaints

In compliance with the Higher Education Opportunities Act of 2008 (HEOA), institutions offering distance education must provide enrolled and prospective students with contact information for filing complaints with its accrediting agency and with the appropriate state agency for handling complaints in the student’s state.

It is recommended that students taking online classes at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) first pursue their concerns with the department and college. In compliance with the AUM Student Handbook, complaints regarding grades, a formal written letter must be sent to designated faculty member of the course. If the complaint is not resolved with the designated faculty member, a formal written letter must be sent to the department head or chair.

If a student has a grievance, a formal written letter must be sent to the Office of the Provost at Auburn University Montgomery. Accrediting Agency
Auburn University Montgomery is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. A person wishing to file a complaint about the institution should use the official Complaint Against Institutions Information Form.   Students should note that the Commission’s complaint processes are “for the purpose of addressing any significant non-compliance with the Commission’s standards, policies, or procedures, the procedures are not intended to be used to involve the Commission in disputes between individuals and member institutions.”  Detailed information on the SACSCOC complaint process can be found on their website: http://www.sacscoc.org
