Mentor shows student future in science
Senior Biology major Paul Yeo didn’t come to AUM with plans for a career in science, but that changed when his professor became his mentor.
AUM Women Lead Society inducts 7 students
The AUM Women Lead Society held its inaugural meeting Aug. 19 and inducted seven AUM students.
After a rigorous application process, the inductees for 2016–17 and their majors are Hydenia Boswell, Biology; Sidnie Boswell, Information Systems; Brittany Bridgewater, Business; Selina Johnson, Communications; Emilea Moultrie, Chemistry/Health Sciences; Kambria Richardson, Secondary English Education; and Teva Stinson, Undeclared.
The women will participate in monthly development activities and an annual community service project. Upon completion of their year of mentorship, a new cohort of women will be inducted, and the previous class will mentor the new group. Women helping women is a primary feature of the program.
With support from the Office of the Provost, the Division of Student Affairs, and the College of Business and the College of Public Policy and Justice, the interdisciplinary society offers a residential learning community dedicated to developing the skills necessary for women students to successfully complete an undergraduate degree and compete in the job marketplace.
By focusing on academic skills development, professional and personal development, and community and global engagement, AUM Women Lead advances the common good in our AUM community.
The faculty/staff mentors and organizing committee include Megan G. Hughes, College of Business; Dr. Rhea Ingram, College of Business; Dr. Kimberly Johnson, College of Business; Dr. Denise Davis-Maye, College of Public Policy and Justice; Amanda Rodriguez, Office of International Student Involvement; Dr. Nichole Thompson, Office of Accountability and Advocacy; Dr. Annice Yarber-Allen, College of Public Policy and Justice; and Dr. Janice Lyn, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Gokul first grad student to complete teaching certification program
Naranjan Gokul, a graduate student in AUM’s Cybersystems and Information Security program, is the first graduate student to complete the Graduate Student Teaching Certification program through the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.
The program, which began in January, aims to assist graduate students in obtaining some of the necessary skills and information for effective teaching, and requires that participants attend eight CELT sessions and a syllabus peer review session.

Diaz to intern with CNN
Paula Diaz, an AUM junior from Venezuela who is majoring in Communications with a Journalism concentration, will intern at CNN in Atlanta this December.
Diaz was able to complete an internship with WSFA 12 News over the summer through AUM, which she says helped her to feel ready to answer interview questions for CNN.
After the interview process, Diaz received a call informing her that she had been selected for the internship.
The internship will involve learning everything it takes to work at a news station, such as editing, producing, tech work, and anchoring. Diaz will be required to shadow all areas, including the web team of CNN.
“My goal is to become an anchor at some point in my life, so I am really looking forward to learning new tips to become a better storyteller in front of the camera,” Diaz said.
Cast your vote for AUM Connected’s 2017–18 common reading book
The AUM Connected: Common Reading Program is accepting nominations for the 2017–18 common reading book. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to nominate a book.
The book should be a reasonable length (under 350 pages), available in paperback (and possibly electronic formats), and appeal to a multidisciplinary audience of students and faculty/staff. The book should also contain themes that can provoke thoughtful discussions and can facilitate a series of lectures, movie, or other events throughout the year.
Please keep these guidelines in mind as you make your suggestion.

Career Development Center holds part-time job fair
The AUM Career Development Center recently held a part-time job fair on campus as part of Weeks of WOW.
More than 300 students met with local employers accepting applications for part-time positions within their organizations. Response from employers was extremely positive, with many students completing applications and scheduling interviews that day.
Several of the participating employers are still seeking qualified applicants for their part-time positions. Students can visit the Warhawk Careers online job platform on MyAUM for more information.

New software is now online to support students, faculty and staff with reporting concerns and judicial complaints to the Office of Accountability and Advocacy.
To see the types of incidents and concerns that can be reported through the system:
- Go to www.aum.edu
- Click on ‘Current Students’ at top of page.
- Scroll down to ‘Student Conduct Information.’
- Click on ‘Report a Concern or Judicial Complaint’ (You’ll be prompted to log into MyAUM.)
If you need to file a report, follow the steps above and then choose a report, fill it out, and submit it online. The report will automatically be submitted to the Office of Accountability and Advocacy for review.
There will be additional training and a demonstration of the new reporting software at a CELT session at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 20 in the Library Tower.

Author, AU Foundation Chair Gossom Jr. to speak
Thom Gossom Jr., the first black athlete to graduate from Auburn University in 1975 and a native of Birmingham, Ala., will speak Sept. 14 at AUM.

SPLC team to talk careers in Civil Rights law; share employment, internship opportunities
A Southern Poverty Law Center attorney and other SPLC employees will share employment and internship opportunities with students July 27.
Ebony Howard, SPLC managing attorney, will present “The Journey to Becoming a Civil Rights Attorney,” and SPLC employees also will discuss the organization’s history and culture.

‘How to use the AUM Library’ workshops
The Warhawk Academic Success Center, Learning Center, Career Development Center and the library are sponsoring the AUMazing Workshop Series. First up is “How to Use the AUM Library.”
These free student workshops will introduce attendees to library and academic support resources that will help them on their academic journey.
All workshops will be held in the Library Computer Lab on the 2nd Floor of the AUM Library Tower. While registration isn’t required, it is encouraged, as seating is limited! You can register electronically via the AUM Library calendar or choose from the times listed below!

Library accepting food for fines
Starting Sept. 1, you may now pay overdue library fines by bringing non-perishable food items to the AUM Library Circulation Desk. One food item will pay for up to $1.50 in overdue fines, and all collected items will be donated to the AUM Food Pantry.
While this program will not be applicable to fines and fees on lost or damaged items or interlibrary loan (ILL) charges, the AUM Library encourages individuals with overdue library fines to take advantage of this new program.

According to The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students have a number of rights, including rights to review educational records, seek amendment of inaccurate and misleading information, provide written consent before disclosure of information, and more.

Flu shots available
Student Health Services is administering the yearly flu vaccine. Appointments are not necessary.
The vaccine will be administered from 9–11 a.m. and 1–4 p.m. Monday through Friday for students, faculty and staff, and dependents age 3 years and up. The cost is $25. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted, and no insurance will be filed.
‘Let’s Talk’ encourages student-counselor dialogue
The AUM Counseling Center on Aug. 23 is beginning a campus outreach program open to all AUM students called “Let’s Talk.”
“Let’s Talk” is an informal, pre-counseling opportunity in which students can meet with a counselor without making an appointment. Students can talk about whatever is important to them, much as they might talk with a resident assistant or an academic advisor.
