More bang for your buck at the Roost

Meal plan options and Mighty Mondays

Each full time student taking at least 12 hours is automatically placed on one of the following meal plans:

  • Residential: 600 dining dollars = $600
  • Commuter: 100 dining dollars = $100

However, a student can add more dining dollars to their current plan with one of the three options below; these are all voluntary plans that are added in addition to the current meal plan options.

  • 165 dining dollars for $150
  • 225 dining dollars for $200
  • 600 dining dollars for $525

In addition, AUM Dining Services also will be offering Mighty Mondays starting Mon., Aug. 28. On Mighty Monday, there will be All You Care to Eat specials for only $9.99 per person.

Marketing, veteran scholarship applications due today

AUM students who are studying marketing or are veterans of the U.S. military are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded by the Harold and Murial Berkman Charitable Foundation. Scholarship applications are due today. Applicants can apply online or print, fill out and mail a PDF version of the scholarship application.

Time for club and organization fair; make sure you’re registered

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is excited to host a second Fall 2017 club and organization fair, which will take place Wed., Aug. 30. Student organizations interested in having a table on both days of the fair can register here.

Faculty: AUM Study Abroad accepting proposals for 2018

Faculty, do you want to turn your class into an unforgettable experience? Are you interested in creating and leading a Study Abroad course for spring or summer 2018?

Think about aligning your course with a study abroad component. AUM Study Abroad is now accepting faculty-led program proposals for 2018. Faculty can find the 2018 Faculty-Led, Short-Term Study Abroad Handbook on AUM’s Study Abroad website.

Become a member of the Curtiss Committee

Curtiss the Warhawk is looking for members to be a part of the Curtiss Committee! This role will assist in making the coolest bird on campus look great and fly through the year. Responsibilities include: attending events with Curtiss, assisting in building up the program, and bringing a positive attitude to the Curtiss “family.”

If you are interested, please fill out the application online. Applications need to be completed by Sep. 3 at midnight. Interviews for the committee will follow at the end of that week: Sep. 7 and Sep. 8.

Flu shots available through Student Health Services

Student Health Services now has flu shots available for $25. The clinic (Moore Hall 102) will be open Monday through Friday from 9­–11 a.m. and 1–4 p.m. to provide the vaccines, available to all faculty, staff, students, and dependents 3 years of age and up.

Dr. David Bronner will speak Sep. 6 at an afternoon EXTRA edition of OutReach at Auburn University at Montgomery’s Business Breakfast Series on “How the World and D.C. Affect Alabama — and Where in the World is Alabama Headed?”

Bronner is CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, a public pension fund with assets in excess of $37 billion providing benefits for more than 339,000 public employees and retirees. RSA is ranked 107th among the top 300 private/public pension funds in the world with the top three being sovereign wealth funds.

Bronner earned a Ph.D. and law degree from the University of Alabama, where he taught in the graduate schools of Business and Education and served as assistant dean and lecturer in the School of Law before coming to the RSA. He has been featured in Time, Governing magazine, The Institutional Investor, The Money Manager, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Forbes Magazine, and Pension & Investment Age for his investment strategies and financial market decisions. In 2003, PlanSponsor magazine named the RSA “Plan Sponsor of the Year.”

AUM-SPLC on Campus Club meeting

The AUM-SPLC on Campus Club will hold its first meeting of the 2017-18 academic year on Wed., Sep. 6.

AUM-SPLC on Campus promotes tolerance of diversity on campus grounded in the belief that students can make a difference in securing equal justice and opportunity. The club is part of the nationwide SPLC on Campus initiative, a nonprofit organization built on our nation’s legacy of student activism.

SPLC on Campus challenges a wide array of intolerance, including racism, sexism and homophobia on college campuses, and speaks out against sexual assault. SPLC on Campus confronts policies that advantage some at the expense of others. Founded in August 2016, AUM SPLC on Campus is a student-led club but accepts AUM staff/faculty as ex-officio members.

At the Sep. 6 meeting, the AUM chapter will elect new officers, select a theme for the year, and discuss upcoming events. All members as well as any interested AUM students, staff or faculty members are invited. Hot Topics Café: Can You Say It?

There are thousands of words in the English language, and we’re going to talk about some of the most controversial ones. Are there certain words only certain people can say? If so, why?

Mark your Calendar for Feb. 14, 2018. AUM Day of Giving is back! AUM’s Office of Advancement is looking for projects that are compelling, unique, specific to AUM, and will appeal to potential donors. Start brainstorming ideas for a project for your department/unit/program!

‘Faith and Fantasy’ at Goodwyn Gallery

The Department of Fine Arts is presenting “Faith and Fantasy: the German Expressionist Woodblock Prints of Hans Grohs (1892–1981),” on view in Goodwyn Gallery, Mon., Aug. 21 –Fri., Sep. 29. The exhibition features 26 original woodblock prints by artist Hans Grohs, drawn from the department’s art collection.

Study Abroad Fair

The 5th Annual Study Abroad Fair will be held Oct. 5. During the fair, AUM students will be able to discover 2018 Study Abroad programs from Study Abroad faculty directors and ambassadors. Visitors also will have an opportunity to explore different languages and cultures.

‘Know Dope’ film with WSFA’s Josh Johnson

Prescription painkiller abuse and overdose are on the rise in Alabama. In an effort to combat this growing epidemic, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama will sponsor the showing of Know Dope, a documentary aimed at educating students and young adults about the dangers of addiction. The film focuses on the dangers and effects of heroin addiction on the lives of two Alabama natives.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to view the film on Wed., Oct. 25. Special guest Josh Johnson, WSFA meteorologist, also will speak and share his personal story.

This event is a joint effort of Counseling and Health Promotion Services, the Department of Athletics, Student Involvement and Leadership, UNIV, and the Warhawk Academic Success Center to educate the AUM community about the heroin epidemic in Alabama.
