Warhawk Spotlight: Students First/Citizenship and Community:

Accounting students help Alabamians, gain real-world experience

Welcome New Warhawks

More than 600 new AUM students gathered Friday, Aug. 19, for New Student Convocation, where they were officially inducted into Warhawk Nation and matriculated into the university environment.

Chancellor Carl A. Stockton delivered the welcome address, reminding students that AUM faculty, staff and administration members are here to help them succeed. Stockton shared with students the value of their own unique perspectives and experiences and charged them to recognize and respect them in themselves and in others. He also encouraged students to connect with faculty and staff and to connect with and support each other as they work here at AUM to build the lives they choose.

Dr. Elizabeth Woodworth, Director of Composition in the College of Arts and Sciences’s Department of English and Philosophy, Honors Associate Professor, and Distinguished Teaching Professor, was the day’s featured speaker. Woodworth delivered a rousing spoken-word performance, declaring herself “Open” — open to students, open to learning, open to growing. She urged students to open themselves to the experiences that AUM will provide — inside and outside the classroom — and to open themselves to each other.

Sahinoglu conducts workshop in Argentina

Dr. Mehmet Sahinoglu, director of AUM’s Informatics Institute since 2008, recently presented at a 4-day long winter workshop in Buenos Aires, Argentina on “Cyber Risk Assessment and Management and Software Quality” at the invitation of the UNTREF (Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero).

UTF is planning to launch a cybersecurity degree program at Buenos Aires, the first of its kind in Argentina.

The Argentinian presentations represented Sahinoglu’s second cybersecurity-themed certification workshop in Latin America. Sahinolglu completed an identical program in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2014 at the  invitation of the PUPR (Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico).

In the August of 2013, Sahinoglu debuted his Cybersecurity-themed lecture series upon invitation from METU’s Informatics Institute.

All three universities are seeking opportunities to exchange ideas with AUM to foster their cybersecurity degree program global initiatives.

Submit your project proposal for #AUMDayofGiving

AUM’s Office of Advancement is accepting project proposals until Aug. 25 for its #AUMDayofGiving, a special 24-hour social media-driven fundraising initiative. AUM’s #AUMDayofGiving occurs in conjunction with the National Day of Giving movement known as #GivingTuesday.

To prepare for the #AUMDayofGiving on Nov. 29, we are looking for AUMazing projects to highlight! AUM has so many exciting programs, and we want to show the community how they can help us continue to provide our students and faculty with the resources they need to excel.

Those interested in taking part in #AUMDayofGiving can download a project proposal form. Forms are due by close of business Thursday, Aug. 25. Submit your form to Marie Harrington at [email protected] or, for questions, call 334-244-3596.
