CHPS launches Orange Folder Initiative

Counseling and Health Promotion Services is pleased to bring you the Orange Folder Initiative.

Under this initiative, faculty and staff have access to an “Orange Folder,” which contains a quick mental health and behavioral reference. Orange Folder information identifies common signs of concerning behavior and provides guidance to faculty/staff on how to respond and whom to contact — such as Accountability and Advocacy, Campus Police, WASC, Student Health Services — in the event you encounter a student in distress.

To launch this initiative, we are providing informative training sessions for faculty and staff who work directly with students — either in or out of the classroom.

The Recognizing and Helping Students in Crisis: How to use the Orange Folder course is led by the AUM Counseling Center’s Associate Director of Clinical Services Greta Chambless and AUM Title IX Coordinator Leslie Meadows. Attendees will gain critical insight into concerns that our students may encounter. You will learn about tools and approaches that you can use to respond effectively to best support our students who may be facing a crisis or safety concern. Participants will leave the session with an Orange Folder, a valuable resource that will be useful in recognizing and responding to students in crisis.

The session can be provided on demand at your next staff meeting. For information about on-demand training, please email Leslie Meadows or call her at 334-244-3755, or email Counseling and Health Promotion Services or call them at 334-244-3469.

Fri., Mar. 9 | 10–11 a.m. | Goodwyn Hall 112

Interested in becoming a UNIV teacher?

Are you interested in teaching first-year students and helping them succeed at AUM?

UNIV is a commitment to AUM’s mission to exemplify excellence through education, as well as the institution’s emphasis on increasing retention, persistence, and graduation rates. UNIV provides opportunities for students to successfully transition into college, both academically and personally.

We designed UNIV to help students foster a connection of belonging at AUM and provide the skills needed to engage with their classes in a way that promotes academic advancement and persistence through graduation. Specifically, the course orients students to AUM’s academic expectations; introduces them to AUM services in place to support their academic success; guides them through professional, academic, and personal goal-setting processes; and provides a peer cohort with whom they experience their first semester.

In addition to providing professional development, resources, supplies, and support, we create the course syllabus and build the course in Blackboard for you. UNIV instructor applications for the 2018-19 academic year will be accepted through March 23, 2018.

For an application packet or more information, please email UNIV Program Manager Amy Ingram or call 334-244-3153.

OJS applications now open

Members of the Orange Jacket Society serve as the official ambassadors of AUM. OJS Members welcome and oversee AUM’s most prestigious events such as graduation, welcoming Chancellor’s guests to various events and working in the community with AUM Outreach.

Selection to the Orange Jacket Society is highly competitive. OJS applicants must be juniors, seniors, or graduate students, and they must have proven passion for AUM.

The application period to become a member of the OJS is open now. Interviews will take place April 5–7 and new members are inducted in May. If you would like to apply for the 2018-19 team, please fill out the available online application.

For more information, please email Carley Scanlan or call 334-244-3158.

Si publishes article

Dr. Lin (Emma) Si recently published an article entitled Recent Advances in Atmospheric Chemistry of Mercury. The article appeared in Atmosphere 2018, 9(2), 76, as an invited paper for Special Issue: Atmospheric Metal Pollution.

Si’s article discusses recent advances in (i) the dominant atmospheric oxidant of elemental mercury, (ii) the mercury oxidation reactions by halogen atoms and by nitrate radical, (iii) the aqueous reduction of oxidized mercury compounds and (iv) the heterogeneous reactions of mercury on atmospheric-relevant surfaces such as atmospheric aerosols. Future research needed to improve understanding of the fate and transformation of mercury in the atmosphere, is also discussed.

Political Film Series features Suffragette

The Political Film Series is back for another semester of exciting, educational films and intelligent discussion!

“Suffragette” is a thrilling historical drama tracking the courageous story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement in England. The final turns of the tale are rather suspenseful, but “also stirring and clear-eyed – the best kind of history less” as the New York Times writes.

Dr. Elizabeth Woodworth will introduce the film in dedication of International Women’s Day.

The Political Film Series is sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and is made possible thanks to a grant from the Ida Belle Young Special Projects Fund. All showings are free and open to the public; popcorn and soda are complimentary. For further information or to receive email updates, please email Dr. Pia Knigge or call 334-244-3834.

In order to participate you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Live in Alabama or work for an Alabama-based company

The Wellness Center is offering an AUMazing prize of its own—a one-year membership will be given to the team selected in a random drawing if both team members each lose 10 pounds. Your team may be composed of individuals outside of campus, but they will only be eligible for prizes awarded by Scaleback Alabama.

Visit Scaleback Alabama for further information and guidelines, and don’t forget to check out the AUM Wellness Center fitness schedule for classes to help you lose those 10 pounds!
