Farrow speaks at Smithsonian and in Russia

Dr. Lee A. Farrow, Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of History, World Languages & Cultures, gave a presentation on the history of the Alaska Purchase at the Ripley Center at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. on Sept. 16.  Following that, Farrow was flown by the State Department of Russia, where she is speaking on the same topic in three cities, Kargopol, Arkhangelsk, and St. Petersburg.

These invitations are a result of Farrow’s latest book, Seward’s Folly: A New Look at the Alaska Purchase.

Mina publishes chapter on social media

Social media have been, for quite some time now, part of the fabric of our lives. But, as with many new technologies, it often takes a while for us to be able to step back, assess the tool’s impact and consider what’s next. The collection, Social Writing/Social Media: Publics, Presentations, and Pedagogies, offers one of the first sets of scholarly work in our field that responds to social media’s influence on both popular and extra-curricular writing as well as on scholarly communication. Too frequently, social media is dismissed as non-academic, unworthy of sustained attention by researchers. The authors featured here present compelling reasons why this oft-neglected form of writing deserves – and demands – continued academic response.

Lilian Mina contributed a chapter (14) to the edited collection, which can be found online in an open-access format, thanks to editors Dough M. Walls and Stephanie Vie. The book will also be available in print through a partnership with the University Press of Colorado.
