Dr. Paul Hard, an associate professor of Counselor, Leadership and Special Education, recently was honored with the Billy Jack Gaither Humanitarian Award.

Hard was recognized at the 18th annual Vigil for Victims of Hate and Violence on the steps of the Alabama State House. The vigil was held for those who have lost their lives to bias-motivated violence based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The annual event started in 1999 following the brutal death of Billy Jack Gaither, a 39-year-old gay man who worked at the Russell Athletics apparel company near Sylacauga, Ala.

Oxford to publish Fitzsimmons book on contested dictionary of French Revolution

The Place of Words: The Académie Française and its Dictionary during an Age of Revolution, by Michael P. Fitzsimmons, professor of History, has been accepted for publication by Oxford University Press.

The book is a study of the fifth edition of the dictionary that the National Convention, which arranged its publication in 1795, hoped would highlight the values and achievements of the French Revolution and republic.

When it appeared in 1798, however, both its structure and content appeared to denigrate them. Napoleon Bonaparte sought to create a new edition to assert control over language, but the sixth edition ultimately did not appear until 1835 and also minimized the significance of the revolution.

Simmons essay published in France

An essay titled “Time, History, and Eternity in the Theophany of Eusebius of Caesarea” by Dr. Michael B. Simmons, distinguished research professor of History, is now off the press (Beauchesne) in Paris, France.

The work is published in a collection of essays in Pascha Nostrum Christus (pages 137–173), edited by Pier Franco Beatrice and Bernard Pouderon and written by an international team of scholars from Australia, the United States, Italy, France and Germany as a Festschrift honoring the Rev. Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, an Italian Catholic priest and theologian in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.

Father Raniero has served as the Preacher to the Papal Household since 1980 under Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. He also served as a professor of ancient Christian history and the director of the Department of Religious Sciences at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan until 1979.

Simmons says the invitation to contribute an essay for Fr. Cantalamessa’s Festschrift is one of the greatest honors of his academic career and of his involvement in the Anglo-Catholic Church tradition.
