Students: Wear denim Wednesday to support sexual assault victims; Denim Day program in GEC

Part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, AUM’s third annual observance of Denim Day will be held Wednesday. Students are encouraged to wear denim and show their support of sexual assault victims.

For 17 years, Denim Day has been recognized on a Wednesday in April to stand against misconceptions toward sexual assault. The observance originated in Italy in the 1990s when an 18-year old girl was raped by her 45-year old driving instructor.

The instructor was convicted of rape, but on appeal, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction. The chief judge of the Italia Supreme Court reasoned that, because the victim wore very tight jeans, she had to help the assailant remove them, and, by removing the jeans, it was consensual sex, not rape.

Women in the Italian Parliament were outraged and wore jeans to work to express their disapproval. The protest spread worldwide, and the first Denim Day was held in Los Angeles in 1999.

Denim Day at AUM is sponsored by AUM ROTC, AUM Orientation and the AUM Transfer Student Association.
