UNIV students, faculty and staff gain ‘different perspective on diversity for leadership’
Students in Amy Ingram’s UNIV 1000 class, as well as AUM students, faculty and staff, attended a presentation April 6 by Dr. Herbert Riedel, president of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, on “A Different Perspective on Diversity for Leadership.”

Library offers umbrellas on rainy days

Woodworth to speak at Baylor’s Armstrong Browning Library
Dr. Elizabeth Woodworth, associate professor of English and director of composition, has been invited to speak May 6 at Baylor University’s Armstrong Browning Library.
Woodworth’s lecture, “Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Stung by the Splendor of Italy,” will take place during the university’s Browning Day 2016 festivities.
Woodworth is excited about the invitation.
“They are an extraordinary institution,” she said. “They funded two fellowships for me to research there for my dissertation. They’ve also welcomed me whenever I wanted or needed to do research since 1995. The ABL has been like a literary home to me.”
AUM goes tobacco free June 1
AUM takes Warhawk wellness seriously. Effective June 1, 2016, AUM will join more than 1,000 other colleges and universities by becoming a smoke-free, tobacco-free campus. AUM is committed to providing a healthier and cleaner campus community for our students, employees and visitors.
A smoke-free campus will further promote the health, safety, and well-being of the AUM Family by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke on campus and at university-owned and -leased properties. For specifics, read the policy online.
Deal talks municipal bankruptcy with financial managers
Dr. Keren H. Deal, a professor of accounting with the AUM College of Business School of Accountancy, presented research on municipal bankruptcy to local, state and federal government financial managers at the March 25 Charleston AGA meeting in Charleston, S.C. Attendees represented the State of South Carolina, the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
“I was honored to be asked by the U.S. and state government financial managers in the Charleston area to share my research on municipal bankruptcy in the United States,” said Deal. “It was a great meeting, and they were all very receptive to the research I presented.”
The AUM College of Business is the only school in the Montgomery area to receive accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB) for both its undergraduate and graduate business programs as well as the discipline-specific accreditation in accounting, putting it in the top one percent of business schools internationally.
Farrow to discuss Alaska Purchase book in Moscow
Dr. Lee A. Farrow, distinguished teaching professor of History and director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, is participating in a conference April 13–14 on Russian America (Alaska). The conference, in Moscow, is hosted by the Russian Institute of World History.
Farrow was invited and is funded by the Kennan Institute in Washington, D.C., to present material from her forthcoming book on the Alaska Purchase. Conference guests will include American and Russian scholars as well as the American ambassador to Russia.
2016–17 UNIV instructors prepare to teach, guide students
Student Success and Retention held its annual UNIV Instructor Professional Development Workshop on April 1 in The Nest and Landing in Warhawk Hall.
About 50 AUM faculty and staff members interested in teaching UNIV for the 2016–17 academic year took part in an engaging and energizing day.
Topics covered included:
- The history of UNIV at AUM
- UNIV theories and philosophies
- Teaching Strategies
- Academic support systems
- Learning activities and experiences
- Helping students connect with AUM, each other and local/global communities
- The UNIV common syllabus
- Grading and using rubrics
- Working with international students
- Using Blackboard
Currently, 42 sections of UNIV are scheduled for fall semester, including four UNIV 1003 (Auburn Guarantee) courses, seven UNIV 1007 (Bridge) courses, and one UNIV 1007 (Honors) class.
UNIV provides new AUM students with opportunities to successfully transition into college, both academically and personally. UNIV also supports students by fostering real connections with AUM and fellow students as well as faculty and staff. UNIV also provides students the skills they need to engage with their curriculum in ways that promote academic advancement and persistence toward graduation.

Refill and Refresh encourages hydration
The AUM Sustainability Committee has launched the “Refill and Refresh” campaign to promote wellness of the body through the use of hydration stations across campus.
Students are encouraged to participate in the campaign by taking a photo while using one of the hydration stations across campus and sending the photo to the AUM Student Affairs Facebook page.

This technology demonstration will allow students with both Apple and Android devices a chance to try apps that assist individuals with disabilities, including an app that allows the user to simulate a variety of visual impairments.

ASF offers discount for ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’
The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is offering a special to college students for it’s April 15 performance of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” during the theatre’s recognition of Shakespeare 400, the 400thanniversary of Shakespeare’s death, April 23.

Film highlights challenges of living with disabilities
During Diversity Week, the Warhawk Disability Alliance, the Center for Disability Services (CDS), the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the AUM Student Government Association are proud to present the 2005 film The Ringer, starring Johnny Knoxville.
The Ringer offers a rare chance to understand how difficult life with a disability can be. The film revolves around a plot to fix the Special Olympics, with the assumption that a “normal” person should have no trouble at all winning a competition against challenged individuals. As the movie progresses, Steve Barker (Johnny Knoxville) comes to realize that while the other competitors may be challenged, they are in no way lesser athletes.
While he loses the competition in the end, he gains a deeper understanding — and respect — for individuals who are disabled.

Warhawk Wellness Day features music, obstacle course with focus on encouraging healthy lifestyles

Pop-Up at The Auburn University at Montgomery Café gives students chance to socialize, kick feet up
The Roost is partnering with a local entertainment group, Northside Productions, to create a show for students to relate, relax and release as the semester ends. The event is similar to an open mic show, where artists perform poetry, song and more.
The goal of Pop-Up at Auburn University at Montgomery Café is to transform The Roost into a relaxing poetry lounge where student’s minds are NOT on finals.
Students can participate in the event by signing up with one of the Roost’s AUMazing cashiers.

Political Film Series features ‘Plastic Paradise’
The final Political Film Series screening of the spring on April 21 is dedicated to Earth Day.
Plastic Paradise (2014) will take you on a journey to Midway Atoll, one of the most remote places on Earth, to reveal the mystery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Dr. Karen Stine will introduce the documentary.
This screening is co-sponsored by the College of Public Policy and Justice and the College of Arts and Sciences. The film is free, open to the public, and made possible thanks to a grant from the Ida Belle Young Special Projects Fund.

Call for nominations for 2016 Excellence in Faculty Outreach Award
Nominations are being accepted for AUM’s 2016 Excellence in Faculty Outreach Award, which includes a $5,000 honorarium that will be presented to one AUM faculty member at the 2016 Convocation for distinguished outreach contributions that exceed expectations for the person’s career stage and job responsibilities.
Nominations will be reviewed by a committee comprised of former recipients of this award, other Auburn University at Montgomery faculty, and individuals from the Office of Business & Community Initiatives. Selection recommendations will be made by the Excellence in Faculty Outreach Award Committee. Questions about the process should be submitted to [email protected].

Call for applications for 2016 Outreach Grant Award
The Vice Chancellor for Business & Community Initiatives announces the availability of up to $20,000 to be awarded through one or more grants to Auburn University at Montgomery faculty and staff. The funds have been set aside to encourage the faculty and staff of Auburn University at Montgomery to develop and implement programs of “outreach” to persons in the community.
