Auburn University at Montgomery earns ‘Silver’ status as Military Friendly School
Auburn University at Montgomery earned recognition on Viqtory Media’s newly released list of 2021-2022 “Military Friendly Schools” for the fourth consecutive year.
AUM earned “Silver Status” in the 2021-2022 rankings, the highest level among the state’s small universities included in the survey. More than 1,200 colleges and universities participated in the survey.
“I am incredibly proud that Auburn University at Montgomery has once again been recognized as a Military Friendly School,” AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton said. “AUM has a proud tradition of serving active duty military members and veterans, as well as their spouses and dependents. Over the course of the last few years, we have invested in new scholarship opportunities for veterans, military personnel and their families, and augmented the resources we offer to help them on their educational journeys.”
In 2020, AUM dedicated a Veteran & Military Resource Center that serves as a “one-stop” shop for this unique student population. The center offers study space, as well as staff members who can assist with unique needs pertaining to benefits or services available to them. AUM’s student population of 5,200 includes approximately 800 who are veterans and military-affiliated (including dependents).
AUM offers the Military and Family Scholarship for currently serving military personnel and their dependents. Scholarship recipients save 15 percent on undergraduate tuition and 35 percent on graduate school tuition. AUM also offers, two-, three and four-year Army ROTC Campus-Based Scholarships, the Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) Scholarship and the Green to Gold Scholarship.
The university also launched the AUM Guard Card, a first-of-its-kind program in Alabama that provides active duty Alabama National Guard members enrolled at AUM with up to $1,000 each academic year to offset the cost of academic supplies, textbooks and on-campus meals.
Among AUM’s 70 student organizations is a Student Veterans of America chapter. In 2018, the university launched Veterans Week, a series of appreciation events commemorating the university’s history of educating military members. The events recognize students, faculty and staff who have served or are serving in the military. The university also offers designated parking spaces for Purple Heart recipients.
The 2021-2022 Military Friendly Schools list will appear in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine. Final ratings were determined by through institutional survey responses and public data sources offering insight into such areas as student retention and graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer), and loan default rates.
