Arbor Day Foundation recognizes AUM as a “Tree Campus”

Auburn University at Montgomery has been recognized as a 2018 Tree Campus USA institution by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Launched in 2008, the Tree Campus USA program honors colleges and universities nationally for their efforts to promote healthy trees and engage students, faculty and staff in conservation efforts. The Arbor Day Foundation determined that AUM meets five standards aligned with effective campus forest management, including the establishment of a tree advisory committee, a campus tree care plan, dedicated budget for a campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

“Your entire campus community should be proud of your sustained commitment to environmental stewardship,” Arbor Day Foundation President Dan Lambe wrote in a letter to Auburn University at Montgomery Chancellor Carl A. Stockton. “… We celebrate your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at Auburn University at Montgomery.”

AUM’s verdant campus features walking trails throughout its 500 acres, as well as a tree-lined Quad, a pond and a garden near student housing. In 2018, the university planted a 25-year-old Toomer Oak near Moore Hall. The 8,000-pound oak was raised on the farm of former Auburn head football coach and athletic director Pat Dye.

The Arbor Day Foundation has launched the “Time for Trees” initiative to promote the planting of 100 million trees in forests and communities and inspiring five million tree planters by 2022. In the last year, Tree Campus USA colleges and universities have collectively planted more than 32,000 trees and engaged more than 31,000 students.
