International defense, security expert to lecture on ‘rise of ISIS,’ extremist violence

Auburn University at Montgomery/Montgomery, Ala. (May 11, 2016) — Dr. Namrata Goswami, an international defense and security expert, will lecture May 20 on “Combating violent extremism: The rise of ISIS and what it means for the future of terrorism/insurgency in Asia” at the Futures Laboratory Roundtable.

The roundtable is a monthly gathering of AUM, AU, and Air University experts, a think tank that networks and dialogues on problem solving; research and education; national security; economic growth; and curriculum development.

Goswami worked nearly a decade at India’s premier defense think tank, the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) in New Delhi, where she specialized in ethnic conflicts, insurgency, counter-insurgency, conflict resolution, and international relations theory.

In 2012–2013, Goswami received the Fulbright-Nehru Senior Fellowship, supporting her work on China-India border conflict scenarios.

Goswami also is part of a renowned group of international experts exploring emerging security challenges in the NATO-sponsored “Partnership for Peace Consortium” of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes, who are studying concerns such as 3-D printing, human self-modification and longevity, transnational insurgencies, the combating of violent extremism, hybrid war, and asteroid threats.
